The Center for Undergraduate Research at BGSU offers funding for students engaged in research, scholarly or creative projects.
- Stipends for student participants
- Funds to cover project costs
- Travel expenses to present your work at professional conferences, competitions, juried exhibitions or performances
We encourage you to apply for funding with the help of your mentor. They can help guide you with project ideas, help you develop your CURS grant application and explain how the process works. If you and your mentor are both new to CURS, reach out to us to set up an initial meeting to explain the application process.

CURS grants
Amount: Up to $500 toward project costs ($750 if a group project by 3-5 students) and up to $200 stipend for each student.
Who’s eligible: Undergraduate students from all disciplines and fields who are conducting research, scholarly or creative projects in the fall or spring semester under the supervision of one or two faculty mentors. Applicants don’t need to be affiliated with the Honors College.
How to apply: Complete the online application. The application requires basic information about the student applicant, faculty mentor(s) and project. You must also upload:
- Project narrative – 2-3 pages that include:
- Project title
- Introduction
- Scholarly question/topic
- Description of project plan
- Anticipated outcomes,
- Brief discussion of how the project’s anticipated outcomes relate to the project’s scholarly question/topic and fit into the current state of the project’s discipline
- Budget – itemized list of all anticipated purchases as well as the total amount requested
- Reference letter(s) from faculty mentor(s) indicating support of the student and the project
Fall deadline
Application open Monday, Aug. 12, 2024, to Monday, Sept. 16, 2024
Spring deadline
Application open Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, to Monday, Nov. 25, 2024
How applications are evaluated: Only complete applications will be considered. Late applications will be considered only if an extension has been granted in advance by Dr. Cordula Mora, CURS director.
Applications for this grant will be evaluated by the reviewers based on this rubric.
Rubric
- Does the project have a clearly formulated research or scholarly question?
- Is the research or scholarly question put into the context of the project’s discipline?
- Is the project described adequately in terms of what the student will be doing and how?
- Are the anticipated outcomes of the project adequately described?
- Will the predicted outcomes advance the project’s discipline? (Outcomes do not have to be publishable on their own.)
- Is the project feasible in the allotted time (a few hours per week for 10 weeks)?
- Is the project well written and are there references to support the project? (The second part will only be considered if applicable for the project's discipline.)
- Does the budget adequately reflect the project’s goals? (A budget of $0 is acceptable if no funds for the project are needed. The student will still get their stipend.)
- Does the recommendation letter Indicate aptitude by the student to execute the project?
- Does the recommendation letter indicate support for the project by the faculty mentor?

Applications for this grant will be evaluated by the reviewers based on this rubric.
The purpose of these funds is to help students gain experience in showcasing their work in a professional setting on a state, national, or international level.
Amount: Up to $200
Travel funds may be available to assist with transportation expenses, lodging, conference registration and some incidental costs, subject to the University's travel reimbursement regulations. All awards are subject to conditions set by Bowling Green State University and the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.
Who’s eligible: Undergraduate students who present the results of their research, scholarly or creative activities at professional conferences, competitions, juried exhibitions or performances. Preference is given to students traveling within the United States. International funding is given on a case-by-case basis.
Requirements
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student at Bowling Green State University
- Must have a faculty mentor
- Must be registered to present at the conference or to participate in the competition or juried exhibition/performance
- Must present (i.e. paper, poster, research, performance) and/or participate (orally)
Students may not receive more than one travel grant per academic year.
How to apply: Complete the online application. The application requires basic information about the student applicant, faculty mentor(s) and the event. You must also upload:
- Evidence of acceptance of presentation at the conference or of participation in the competition or juried exhibition/performance
- Reference letter(s) from faculty mentor(s) indicating support of the student and the event participation
Deadline
Travel funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are accepted all year on a rolling basis. Applicants should submit their applications as early in the fiscal year as possible and at least four weeks before traveling.
Applicants will be notified by email of approval as soon as possible.
How to submit expenses
All itemized receipts must be submitted by email to Dr. Cordula Mora, CURS director, for processing.
Submit the following items:
- Event program cover page and page listing student as participant
- Conference/event registration fee
- Travel receipts (e.g., airfare)
- Accommodation receipts (e.g., hotel receipt)
- Itemized receipts of food/fuel purchases
All items must be accompanied by a bank or credit card statement or a copy of a check showing proof of draft or change to the account. The account from which the funds were drafted, or the credit card account on which the charges were made, must match the account on the corresponding receipt. These are requirements of Bowling Green State University Accounts Payable Department.
All items must be submitted within 30 days of the travel start date. If supporting documentation is not received within this time period you may be forced to forfeit your grant according to BGSU Accounts Payable regulations.
