BGSU Department of Theatre and Film to present 'Silent Sky' Nov. 21-24

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Department of Theatre and Film will present "Silent Sky" Nov. 21-24 in the Thomas B. and Kathleen M. Donnell Theatre in the Wolfe Center for the Arts.

Written by author, playwright and screenwriter Lauren Gunderson, "Silent Sky" explores a woman’s place in society at a time when only men were acknowledged for making significant technological innovations and discoveries.

The performance tells the story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt as she begins working at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s as a “Computer.” Beneath the watchful eye of Peter Shaw, Leavitt attempts to measure the distance between stars even as she is denied access to a telescope. As she spends time mapping the universe, she contemplates her place in it.

The BGSU cast of "Silent Sky" is led by Claire Oliver as Henrietta Leavitt; Liv Lutz as Margaret Leavitt, Henrietta’s sister; Mariana Jacoia as Annie Cannon, the head of stellar photometry at the Harvard Observatory; Finleigh Klein as Williamina Fleming, a Scottish immigrant who became the first woman to hold the title “curator” in astronomy; and Ean McIntosh as Peter Shaw, an astronomer apprentice.

The artistic and production team consists of BGSU faculty, staff and students in the Department of Theatre and Film. Doctoral students Madison Ellis and Sarah Nesselroade Hopson serve as director and assistant director, respectively.

The curtains open for "Silent Sky" at 8 p.m. November 21-23 and at 2 p.m. November 23-24. Attendees are invited to visit a pre-show interactive experience in the Wolfe Center lobby beginning 30 minutes before each performance.
