12th Annual Teaching and Learning Summit
Bowling Green State University’s 12th annual conference on teaching and learning will take place March 28 and 29 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Sponsored by the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE), the 2018 Teaching and Learning Summit will bring together members of the University community to discuss and strategize ways to support and elevate teaching and student learning at BGSU.
Concurrent sessions will be held each day, and are free and open to the community. The deadline to register for the keynote luncheon is 5 p.m. March 19.
Author Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire will give the keynote talk, “Get Students to Focus on Learning Instead of Grades: Metacognition Is the Key,” at 12:30 p.m. during the noon luncheon on March 28 in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom at the Union. For over a decade, McGuire has been acclaimed for her presentations and workshops on metacognition and student learning because the tools and strategies she shares have enabled faculty to facilitate dramatic improvements in student learning and success.
Her book, "Teach Students How to Learn," encapsulates the model and ideas she has developed over the past 15 years. Her ideas are being adopted by an increasing number of faculty, with considerable success.
Following the luncheon, McGuire will lead a related breakout session on “Increasing Student Motivation: Strategies that Work,” from 2:30-4 p.m. in 308 Union.
Faculty Learning Communities from the CFE will facilitate presentations over the two days focusing on such topics as Media Literacy and Critical Thinking, Quantitative Literacy, Arts-Based Research Methods as Pedagogy, and Diversity and Inclusion, along with a panel discussion on High-Impact Practices for Student Engagement. In a second panel discussion, BGSU faculty who have attended the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity “Faculty Success Program” will share their experiences in the program and offer tips and recommendations on improving productivity while balancing multiple demands. The session will include a discussion with participants on ways to implement ideas to support faculty at BGSU.
On the 29th, faculty, staff and students can participate in a brown bag lunch discussion on teaching and learning, from 12-1:15 p.m. in 308 Union. Beverages and a dessert will be provided. Space is limited; the deadline to register for the session is also March 19.
“The Teaching and Learning Summit is a wonderful arena for faculty to see innovative, current and engaging initiatives that their peers across the BGSU campus are involved in,” said Dr. Julie Matuga, vice provost for institutional effectiveness. “In addition, it’s an excellent opportunity for networking, for meeting colleagues, and for discussing teaching and learning across the disciplines.”
