Retirement reception set for Julie Barnes

The College of Arts and Sciences is hosting a retirement reception to honor Dr. Julie Barnes from 3-5 p.m. May 2 in the Dimling Family Lounge, 317 Bowen-Thompson Student Union. A brief program will begin at 4 p.m. The University community is invited to attend.

Barnes, who has more than 35 years in higher education, is executive associate dean for the college, a position she has held since 2013. She joined the dean’s staff in 2007 when she was named associate dean for student services. From 2008-13, she was associate dean for resources and planning, and has served as acting dean for the college. Throughout her tenure, Barnes has maintained faculty status in the Department of Computer Science, where she started as an instructor in 1981 and rose to professor in 2006. She has co-authored two books and numerous publications and served on countless college and university-level committees throughout her career.

She is a three-time alumna of BGSU, with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, a Master of Arts in mathematics and a Master of Science in computer science. She earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Ohio State University.
