Nominations now being accepted for BGSU’s Educator of the Year
The Educator of the Year award was developed by the College of Education and Human Development to recognize a BGSU alumni educator for excellence in the field of education. The inaugural award was presented last May to Jerry Shrock ’85 at EDHD’s spring Capstone Day. Shrock delivered the keynote speech to a room of more than 100 future teacher-educators.
"As one of the largest and most influential teacher preparation programs in the region, we know that our alumni are having an important impact in schools and communities each and every day," said Dr. Dawn Shinew, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development. "The Educator of the Year award provides us with a valuable opportunity to honor one of these individuals and let them know how proud we are to have them representing BGSU."
This award is open to all alumni educators across the United States who hold current licensure in any area of pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade education or administration and are currently working full-time in the field. Educators and administrators working in private or public settings in all areas of pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade education, including specialists, (art, music, physical education, special education) are eligible for the award.
In 2015, Shrock became the inaugural recipient of the award. In his 30-year career, he taught over 8,000 students spanning from grades five – 12 and coached numerous sports. Most notably, he created the “Blue Dot Conversation Campaign” to prevent bullying and suicide in school-aged children. His program helps students view their school and teachers as a support system when they feel they have no other options. Shrock returned to alma mater last May to receive his award and deliver the keynote lecture at the spring Capstone Day.
Nominations are open now through February 15th. Nominators can submit materials online or by mail to the Dean’s Office at 444 Education Building, Bowling Green State University 43403.
