Summer commencement at BGSU is Aug. 4

BOWLING GREEN, O.— This weekend, for the 274th time since its founding in 1910, Bowling Green State University will hold commencement exercises. Presided over by President Mary Ellen Mazey, summer commencement begins at 9 a.m. Aug. 4 on the University Hall lawn, weather permitting. In the event of rain, ceremonies will be moved into the Stroh Center.

Giving the commencement address will be BGSU alumna Dr. Marsha Bordner, president emerita of Terra Community College. Bordner received both undergraduate and master’s degrees from BGSU. Under her leadership, Terra converted to the semester system; raised $2 million for a capital campaign; built a new skilled-trades center; completed a major renovation project that created a wing for music and the arts and another for nursing and allied health; and developed several new programs in health careers. In June, the college’s board of trustees renamed a recently renovated campus building the Marsha S. Bordner Arts and Health Technologies Center.

Among the total 993 diplomas to be awarded Saturday, 408 will go to graduate students. Of those, 370 will receive master’s degrees and 38, doctorates. The youngest master’s degree candidate is 22, while the oldest is 61; among the doctoral degree candidates, the youngest is 27 and the oldest 48.

Of the 585 bachelor’s degrees, 72 will come with high honors for academic achievement.

The 56 international students graduating come from 20 countries.
