janus trio to perform at BGSU March 3
BOWLING GREEN, O.–The janus trio (cq), an ensemble of flute, viola and harp, will perform a concert of new works at 8 p.m. March 3 in Bryan Recital Hall of the Moore Musical Arts Center at Bowling Green State University. The concert, part of the Music at the Forefront concert series sponsored by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music, is free and open to the public.
The program includes works by Cameron Britt, Caleb Burhans, Anna Clyne, Claude Debussy, Angelica Negron and Kaija Saariaho.
Brooklyn-based janus – flutist Amanda Baker, violist Beth Meyers and harpist Nuiko Wadden - was formed in 2002 with the goal of presenting and creating new repertoire for the trio through commissioning projects and collaborations. Named after the Roman god whose double-faced image peers into the past and future, the trio maintains the established tradition for instrumentation while breaking new ground into unexplored sonic frontiers. Works by Claude Debussy, Toru Takemitsu, Harald Genzmer, André Jolivet, Sophia Gubaidulina and Kaija Saariaho have been performed by this combination of something bowed, something blown and something plucked.
To date, janus has added more than 20 new pieces to the trio library through individual submissions and collaborative projects with universities. Since its inception, the trio has collaborated with the composition departments from Princeton, Colgate, New York, Columbia and Cornell universities. Not limiting itself solely to universities, janus also has an ongoing relationship with the Aspen Music Festival and School, annually presenting a week of activities for over 1,000 children from grade school through high school.
In New York City, janus has been featured at halls including Symphony Space, Joe’s Pub, the Brooklyn Academy of Music Café and the Look and Listen Festival. Other group credits include performances at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Spark Festival in Minneapolis, Rocky River (Ohio) Chamber Music Series, Glenwood Springs (Colo.) Center for the Arts and the Dame Myra Hess Recital Series in Chicago.
janus records for New Amsterdam Records and can be heard on its debut release, “i am not.” The trio is also featured on “Gravity and Air,” a release from fellow New Amsterdam artist Andrew McKenna Lee.
Music at the Forefront is an annual concert series featuring performances by accomplished and innovative performers of contemporary music. For more information, contact the center at 419-372-2685 or email kdoles@bgsu.edu.
