BGSU breaks enrollment records

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Classes started today (Aug. 23) at Bowling Green State University’s main campus and BGSU Firelands, and thanks to substantial enrollment gains there is plenty of news to celebrate at both locations.

BGSU’s fall 2010 enrollment is record setting in a number of ways. Almost 14,000 students applied for admission to the University, the highest in school history, and 3,871 enrolled, making it BGSU’s second largest freshman class.

Breaking it down even further, BGSU welcomed its most diverse class, representing just over 20 percent of new freshmen. Over 14 percent of the class of 2014 is from out of state, with the majority coming to BGSU from Michigan.

Academic standards remained strong with the class of 2014. Thirty percent had a GPA of 3.5 or higher in high school while 63 percent had a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The overall GPA for this new class is 3.21.

Transfer students increased as well. Just over 700 enrolled, the second highest in school history. Over the entire calendar year, BGSU welcomed the largest number of new students in school history.

“Bowling Green has always had a solid reputation in the market,” said Albert Colom, vice president for enrollment management. “We provide an outstanding option for students. The investment in recruiting the University made helped us get out in front of students, and the campus sold itself — and we did this by talking one-on-one with families about the value of a BGSU education.”

Enrollment at BGSU Firelands is also on the rise. This year the school welcomed over 2,500 students, a first for Firelands and an increase of over 3 percent from 2009. The campus received 996 total applications – also a record.
