Four BGSU students named Reams Fellows

BOWLING GREEN, O.—Four students have won Frazier Reams Public Affairs Fellowships at Bowling Green State University.

Erika Andrews of Lorain, Christina Siegfried of Monclova and Alison Kemp of Warren will each receive $5,000 fellowships for the 2008-09 academic year. Stephanie Guigou of New Knoxville, who will graduate in December 2008, will receive a $3,000 fellowship.

The Reams fellowship program was created in 1973 in memory of Frazier Reams Sr. and in recognition of his service to the broadcasting industry and as a member of the U.S. Congress and a trustee of BGSU.

The fellowships are given to rising seniors who plan to pursue careers in public service and have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Fellows are selected following a review of applications, letters of recommendation, supportive materials and an interview.

Erika Andrews

Andrews is majoring in adolescent to young adult education with a focus on integrated language arts. She is president of Kappa Delta social sorority, Bacchus/Gamma liaison for GAMMA (Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol) and a member of the Bacchus/Gamma Healthy Lifestyles Organization. She also has been involved in Dance Marathon for the past two years.

Earlier this year, Andrews worked on a program called PartySmart during National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. The two-hour event, which provides a safe alternative to risky drinking, was attended by nearly 500 students—nearly double the number participating in past years.

Her career goal is to be a high school English teacher.

Alison Kemp

Kemp is majoring in journalism, with a minor in German. She has worked for the BG News, the student newspaper at BGSU, since 2005. She has served as assistant campus editor and features editor for the student paper, and has also been a reporter for the Warren Tribune Chronicle and the Youngstown Vindicator.

Current president of the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Kemp played an active role in rebuilding chapter membership. She has taken part in one national and two regional SPJ conferences, and attended the Ted Scripps Leadership Institute for SPJ members in June 2007. She plans to study in Salzburg, Austria, during the coming year and report on her experiences as an American student in Europe for the BG News.

Her goal is to someday become a foreign correspondent.

Christina Siegfried

Siegfried is a visual communication technology major. President and former treasurer of the College of Technology Ambassadors, she has served the college in various ways as a volunteer.

Siegfried is a lab and office assistant for the National Institute for the Study of Digital Media on campus and, as an intern, has created mini-documentaries and commercials for the Anthony Wayne Schools. Her faculty advisor describes her as a “social entrepreneur” who has the academic ability, initiative, maturity and fluency of communication, in multiple media, to create positive change. The BGSU student’s ultimate dream is to travel the globe making documentaries.

Stephanie Guigou

Guigou is a journalism major, with minors in graphic design and French. She is involved in the BGSU forensics team, Obsidian multicultural magazine, Miscellany magazine, the BG News, the President’s Leadership Academy, Dance Marathon and the Honors Program. She served as BGSU chapter president of the Society for News Design her sophomore year, and has had design internships in the summer with the Tucson Citizen in 2006 and St. Petersburg Times in 2007.

Last spring she studied in Tours, France, and had the chance to travel in Spain to “shadow” infographics designer Ferdinando G. Baptista, now infographics editor at National Geographic. Her honors also include receiving an Associated College Press Honorable Mention for a BG News front-page design in 2006 and being chosen to be a workshop assistant in Tunisia in 2005. In Tunisia she assisted BGSU faculty in teaching journalism principles and organizing a student newspaper through a project funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative of the U.S. State Department.

Her career goal is to become a visual journalist who is able to convey information both through words and graphics. One day she hopes to write books that use visuals to convey information about important historical moments.
