Protecting Your Personal Information
At Bowling Green State University, protecting the personal information of our faculty, staff and students is essential to maintaining a safe and secure learning and working environment. As cyber threats become more sophisticated and cyberattacks are on the rise, we are committed to strengthening digital security across campus. By staying vigilant and following best practices, we can protect both individual privacy and the integrity of our data.
We have developed a set of guidelines to help you update your personal information online:
Avoid posting personal email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses.
- Update existing online profiles that include personal email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses and replace with department-specific contact information.
Do not share personal biographical information.
- Review employee bios or profiles on public-facing platforms (e.g., University website, social media). Ensure that only relevant professional information is shared, such as job title, qualifications and experience. Avoid including sensitive personal details such as birth dates, family information and personal achievements that do not pertain to your role.
Utilize Single Sign-On (SSO) for internal documents.
- Sensitive internal documents should only be accessible to authorized users via a BGSU login. Contact Marketing and Brand Strategy (marketing@bgsu.edu) to help determine the best location for these materials.
By following these guidelines, we can safeguard personal data from unauthorized access and reduce the risk of cyberattacks. Thank you for your assistance as we work to create a safer digital environment for everyone.
