Honors Course Description

HNRS 2010: Introduction to Critical Thinking (3 credits)

The first of two courses required for all first-year Honors students. Students will gain practice in a systematic method of reflective critical thinking through the evaluation and construction of arguments drawn from readings, media, culture, and everyday life. Emphasis will be placed on the refining of reading, writing, thinking, speaking and listening skills, as well as the transfer of those skills to other arenas of students' academic, professional, and personal lives.

HNRS 2020: Critical Thinking About Great Ideas (3 credits)

HNRS 2020: Critical Thinking about Great Ideas is the second of two courses required of all first-year students in the Honors College. Building on the apparatus and vocabulary from HNRS 2010: Introduction to Critical Thinking, which uses M. Neil Browne and Stuart Keeley’s Asking the Right Questions, the course encourages students to think critically about some of the ideas that have shaped the world in which they live. Although instructors can choose supplementary course materials from a diverse range of humanities and arts disciplines (literature, film, theatre, art, etc.), all sections of HNRS 2020 must use one of the following foundational texts: Dennis Ford’s The Search for Meaning (University of California Press, 2007); Leslie Stevenson’s (et al.) Thirteen Theories of Human Nature (Oxford University Press) [earlier editions too] Instructors have the freedom to define their own course assignments, but in order to maintain a consistency of experience across multiple sections, instructors are expected to require 25-30 pages of writing from students during the course of the semester, and a final project that must be used to assess students’ fulfillment of the BGP Humanities & Arts learning outcomes. Additionally, HNRS 2020 engage students with the Honors College’s learning outcomes: Critical Thinking, Oral and Written Communication, and Integrative Learning.

HNRS 4000: Honors Seminar (1 credit, variable topics)

Proposals for HNRS 4000 seminars (1 credit) should be prepared in such a way as to expect both first year and upperclass students. The intergenerational blend of students who have already completed the critical thinking curriculum with students who are going through their critical thinking curriculum at the same time should create a dynamic classroom environment that we believe will benefit the retention and engagement of all our students.

Seminars can explore a variety of topics that intersect with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and privilege. Faculty will be paid an overload for teaching or Honors will transfer money to your department if you will receive a course release for teaching.

Part-Time Instructors (Adjuncts)

The Honors College at Bowling Green State University seeks applications for possible part-time adjunct teaching positions for HNRS 4000: Honors Seminar (1 credit) for Fall 2023 and spring 2024, for HNRS 2010: introduction to Critical Thinking (3 credits) for Fall semesters, and for HNRS 2020: Critical Thinking About Great Ideas (3 credits) for the Spring semesters.

If your topic is selected, you will also need to apply for adjunct status, so that you can be compensated.

Proposals should include the following information:

  • Faculty name and title:
  • Title of class:
  • Term:
  • Description of seminar. This should be limited to 500 words and will be used by students and advisors when registering for classes.
  • Description of how students will develop their intercultural knowledge and competence. Please highlight how students will achieve milestone level 2 on at least one of the competencies in AACU’s Intercultural Knowledge and Competency VALUE Rubric.
  • Teaching considerations. Include special room or technology needs you may know about, preferred days and times, etc.
  • Include any other information you want known as selections are made.

Applicants should submit the following items: (1) a letter of interest, (2) curriculum vitae or resume, (3) two current (no more than a year old) letters of reference, and (4) transcripts indicating highest degree earned (unofficial or official). Successful applicants will be required to authorize and pass a background check as a condition of employment. An official transcript indicating the highest degree earned will be required at the time of employment. Qualified candidates and current adjuncts will be forwarded to future pools, unless they indicate that they do not wish to do so.
