Benefits of the Honors College

Academic enrichment

  • Small classes. We limit classes to 25 students. You’ll have more opportunities to interact with peers and faculty.
  • Research opportunities. Distinguish yourself in the job market post-graduation. Work one-on-one with faculty members on research or conduct original scholarship.
  • Critical thinking development. All first-year Honors students are required to take two critical thinking courses. Employers often cite critical thinking as a desirable skill for future employees. And we don’t just teach you what critical thinking is. We ask you to apply it to projects that align with your interests. Many have told us that these courses were pivotal experiences, helping them frame their education and how they see the world.
  • Superior faculty. Our instructors are some of the best teachers on campus. They get to know you and your abilities and provide the best possible learning environment.
  • Priority registration. Honors students register earlier than their classmates who are not in the Honors College.
  • Graduate with University Honors. This is the highest academic recognition at BGSU.

Personalized support

  • Individualized academic counseling. Every Honors student gets an Honors advisor in addition to their academic advisor. We ensure you are on track to graduate with University Honors and help get you connected to unique opportunities. We are here to celebrate your wins and help you work through challenges.
  • Supportive, friendly Honors staff. We love getting to know and helping our Honors students. Give us a call or stop in the office.
  • Honors scholarships. Over 30 full, in-state tuition scholarships and study abroad scholarships are available each year for incoming Honors students. Scholarships also are available for continuing Honors students. The Honors College can also help any BGSU student interested in applying to National Fellowships and Scholarships.
  • BGSU Honors Students of Color. This active student organization seeks to equip our multicultural Honors students with the confidence, skills and tools to successfully navigate their experience not only in the Honors College but at BGSU.

Enhanced college experience

Honors College students have ample opportunities to develop the skills that will help you in your college career and your life beyond BGSU.

  • Honors Learning Community (HLC). Live with and learn from other high achievers in this residential learning community in Founders Hall. You’ll have easy access to Honors College faculty, advisors and staff and opportunities to take part in activities and trips.
  • Learning experiences outside the classroom. The Honors College sponsors a diverse array of student organizations and service opportunities. You’ll have chances to interact with speakers, travel to off-campus events and become a leader on campus.
  • Interdisciplinary connections. Honors students are supported as they integrate various academic disciplines into their own work, effectively “building bridges” between fields. If you have diverse interests, you can explore unique combinations such as music and neuroscience or engineering, education and psychology, or creative writing and physics.
