Degrees Offered
Master of Education in Reading
Programs Offered
The School of Teaching and Learning (STL) offers 2 programs in the area of reading.
The BGSU Reading Endorsement Certificate Program leads to the Ohio Reading Endorsement on a valid teaching license. In addition to the five course sequence, endorsement seekers must successfully complete the state-prescribed licensure exam. The program provides applicants the opportunity to earn the Reading Endorsement while simultaneously completing the BGSU Certificate Program. When added to an existing teaching license, program completers are prepared to teach reading across the grades, K-12. The Reading Endorsement Certificate Program admission criteria include both state licensure requirements and BGSU graduate program guidelines.
The Master of Education in Reading Program consists of just 7 more courses beyond the endorsement. This program provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for employment as a reading specialist and/or literacy coach. The specific goal of the program is to prepare teachers to provide specialized reading and writing instruction, to assess and diagnose literacy behavior, and to serve as resource persons in K-12 settings. Students choose Plan II (non-thesis option).
Applicants to the M.Ed. Reading Program should have a teaching certificate/license and teaching experience at the early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescent/young adult level. The M.Ed. in Reading Program is structured in accordance with the licensing requirements established by the Ohio Department of Education Ohio Board of Higher Education and the International Literacy Association.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master's degree, students in the Reading program are expected to be able to:
- Write a research paper addressing an essential component of reading
- Conceptualize literacy and design a research-based (potentially interdisciplinary) unit that operationalizes the construct, incorporating the 6 language arts in authentic ways and present the project as professional development
- Create a professional development presentation for multiple grade bands based on school and district reading data
- Develop recommendations for home and school supported by assessment and research
- Construct 2 case reports and share findings with teachers and administrators
- Conduct a coaching conference, identify next steps for both coach and teacher
- Show their comprehensive knowledge of reading on the State Required Content Knowledge Exam, OAE 038/039
Prerequisites for Graduate Work
Prerequisites for the M.Ed. programs include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, 3.0 GPA, and to have completed the 12 hour reading core.
