Admission Procedure
Admittance to the MAT program is selective; two paths of admittance are available:
PATH #1: Students in their last semester of undergraduate coursework or who have already earned a bachelor's degree
- Apply directly through the Graduate Admissions application site. Applicants must meet the criteria listed below.
PATH # 2: BGSU undergraduate students
- Apply through the BGSU Graduate College's Accelerated Bachelor's to Master's Program by applying for early admission as an Undergraduate Accelerated student. This requires a minimum 3.0 GPA after 90 undergraduate credits or 3.2 GPA after 75 credits. In this option, you may forego the GRE submission.
- Enroll in nine graduate credit hours which are used toward the curriculum requirements of the graduate program when earning a B or better in the courses.
- When these requirements, and the requirements below, are successfully completed and the student completes a bachelor's degree, they automatically advance to the graduate program as a master's degree student.
BOTH PATHS
Students need to:
- Complete the prerequisite courses with a C or better
- Submit the documents below to the Graduate College:
- A formal interview;
- An admittance essay (describing your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an athletic trainer within the allied healthcare setting and within the directions and trends of the profession);
- Completion of AT technical standards;
- Two letters of recommendation; and
- Evidence of 40 hours of observation under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer.
Before starting the MAT program, students are expected to have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher, and to provide documentation of a current ADA technical standards (Appendix H), up-to-date immunizations (HBV, MMR, TDAP, Meningitis and Varicella), TB testing, BCI background check, and current emergency cardiac care certification.
Once students are accepted into the MAT, they are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and to complete all graduate course work with a C or better.
Degree Requirements
MAT students will complete a total of 54-56 hours of graduate coursework over a 24-month period and will complete the degree by passing a comprehensive examination. The comprehensive is a two-part examination, consisting of both a written and practical examination. The written comprehensive exam will be administered electronically and will be formatted similarly to the Board of Certification national examination and cover all of the practice domains of athletic training. the practical examination will be administered face-to-face and will be primarily focused on content areas for which the student has had limited exposure, as identified by their patient encounter logs over the course of their clinical rotations.
