Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Master's degree, students in the HMSLS program are expected to be able to:
- Interpret, synthesize, and evaluate the literature appropriate to her/his area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Integrate learning from courses taken in his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Write clearly, demonstrating grammatical precision and avoiding unnecessary jargon related to his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills encompassing different perspectives in his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate competence in those skills required of his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate leadership capacity appropriate to his/her area of study within human movement, sport, and leisure studies.
- Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to interact with a diverse, multicultural, and global society.
Accreditation
The program in Sport Administration is accredited by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).
Prerequisites to Graduate Work
Applicants should have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited undergraduate college/university with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0. Students are expected to have an undergraduate course of study that provides a solid background in the specialization to which they apply (e.g., leisure studies, tourism, or recreation; sport management or business; exercise science, kinesiology, physical education, or psychology).
Admission Procedure
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate programs in Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure should follow the instructions outlined in the Graduate Admission section of this Graduate Catalog. All application materials should be submitted electronically to the Graduate Admissions Office.
Additional criteria for the Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure M.Ed. program include: 1) the HMSL Program Application, 2) a personal statement, 3) current resume, 4) two (2) letters of recommendation, and 5) GRE score (waived if undergraduate GPA is 3.5 or above or if applicant has 5 years of post-baccalaureate relevant work experience).
Degree Requirements
Within the Graduate HMSL program, all students choose courses from a flexible core, take 6 credits of research classes, and complete a thesis, Master's project or comprehensive examinations. Students work closely with an advisor to select the courses best suited to their goals. There are many opportunities to gain research or practical experiences. It is expected most full-time students will take 2 years to complete the Master's degree.
In the Leisure and Tourism specialization, students complete 12 credit hours of core courses and 9-12 hours of elective courses; 30 hours are required in the thesis option while 33 hours are required in the non-thesis option. In the Kinesiology and Sport Administration specializations, students are required to complete 32 credit hours (thesis) or 33 credit hours (non-thesis). Graduate Kinesiology specialization students select 12 credit hours of core courses and 11-12 hours of elective coursework. The Sport Administration specialization students complete a 6 credit core, select 12 credit hours within their specialization, and have 3-6 hours of electives.

Graduate courses offered by the School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies use the prefix HMSL. Students also may take courses in a variety of other graduate programs if approved by their advisor.
