Course goals
In 2014 the Ohio Department of Education raised the standards for teaching reading, in part to meet the Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee, a commitment to help those behind n the goal to have every student on track for reading success by the end of third grade.
The BGSU reading endorsement online graduate certificate gives teachers an understanding of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Other subjects covered include the appropriate use of assessments, differentiated instruction and selecting appropriate instructional materials. The curriculum is entirely research-based.

Current Ohio teachers looking to add the reading endorsement to their certification and flexibility in their program should consider the online reading endorsement from BGSU.
The program offers online delivery, straightforward requirements for entry and graduation, as well as 15 credit hours toward a master's degree in Curriculum and Teaching or Reading.

Financial aid is available for this Certificate Program. While not required, applicants may wish to dual enroll in the Master of Education in Reading program. This can be done when completing the application for the Reading Endorsement Certificate Program.

The Ohio reading endorsement graduate certificate program allows applicants to earn the Ohio reading endorsement and complete part 1 of the BGSU master’s in education with a focus on reading.
When added to an existing teaching license, reading endorsement program completers are prepared to teach reading from Kindergarten to grade 12. The program is designed for candidates who wish to focus on positions as reading teachers at all grade levels and with all students.

Curriculum
Students on the BGSU reading endorsement certificate start their online learning by identifying the significant areas of concern in literacy development including looking at the issues from psychological, sociological and historical points of view.
Next, current research supported alternative solutions are outlined, including techniques of assessing literacy and literacy intervention strategies for students in both the classroom and resource setting.
Extensive field hours will build experiences of appropriate informal and formal instruments and the design of appropriate intervention and support services for the young reader.

Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2022-2023, with our next reaffirmation of accreditation scheduled for 2032-2033.
