Tools for Success
1. Use the Right Device
As an eCampus student, it is important to have a device equipped to support your academic area of study, and to be used as your primary means for communication with instructors, peers, groups, etc. while learning off-campus. Each year ITS collaborates with the Ziggabyte® technology store at Falcon Outfitters and the various BGSU academic departments to provide a Student Technology Guide comprised of the various technology specifications, software and accessories recommended for BGSU students, based on major. We recommend reviewing this guide to ensure you have the appropriate technology for academic success as a BGSU eCampus student.
Please Note: ITS does not recommend the use of Chromebooks because they are not compatible with many academic and enterprise applications.
2. Ensure Adequate Network Connection
A strong and reliable internet connection is a top priority for eCampus students learning online. For adequate connectivity, ITS suggests a minimum internet speed of 20 Mbps but recommends speeds of 50 Mbps or more. In addition to this recommendation, ITS maintains a webpage of information and resources to help ensure you are getting the most out of your connection.
3. Take Advantage of Available Student Resources
BGSU offers a variety of free and discounted software and support, just for being a student. Start your semester off right by installing Microsoft Office on up to five devices for FREE, which includes cloud file storage via OneDrive.
Utilize remote meeting tools like Zoom to assist with online learning and communication.
ITS provides troubleshooting services for ALL laptops and desktops, in addition to being a licensed Apple and Dell repair center for which we offer warranty and non-warranty services. Contact ITS to setup an appointment.
Connect to BGSU remote labs to access and use specific software that may be required for coursework.
4. Configure Duo Two Factor Authentication
BGSU utilizes Duo Two Factor Authentication to provide a secure method for accessing important university data, including MyBGSU and BGSU email. Setup your BGSU account for Duo and configure your authentication device(s) in order to ensure access to these important services.
In addition to Two Factor Authentication, ITS urges students to remain vigilant against phishing attempts. Learn more about phishing on our Email Phishing webpage and report suspicious messages to abuse@bgsu.edu.
