October 2014

It has been a beautiful October on campus. The turning of the leaves is not only a sign of cooler weather, but marks mid-semester on our campuses.

While our students are enjoying the crisp fall air, they are also hard at work. One group attended an undergraduate research conference recently and brought back high honors for their work in biology.

In another example of the University’s commitment to our students, BGSU has been recognized by CollegeNet and Payscale on their Social Mobility Index for helping disadvantaged students succeed. We ranked 53rd out of 539 schools, and had the highest ranking in Ohio, showing that BGSU continues to provide a value-added education.

October was full of events, including Homecoming and the Legacy Weekend. We also inducted four new members of the Academy of Distinguished Alumni: Chuck Bogosta ‘81, John Damonti ’82, Alicia Fernandez-Mott ’82, and Gary Kovacs ’69. I hope you take just a minute and watch the touching videos about their accomplishments.

One of our faculty members, Dr. Stephen Langendorfer, was honored with the Ireland Medal for his work aimed at saving lives from drowning. Stephen, a professor of exercise science and director of the School of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies, has been a BGSU faculty member since 1994.

If you are a fan of the television show “Jeopardy,” you may have seen our very own English professor Dr. William Albertini, who made an impressive three appearances earlier this week!

On a sad note, the University community lost three strong supporters this month with the passing of former President Paul Olscamp, and arts patrons Mary Wolfe and Dr. Marjorie Conrad. Our condolences go out to their families and friends.

We are excited to be cohosting the second annual Greenbrier Intercollegiate Golf Tournament with Marshall University, April 11-13 at The Greenbrier resort. The first year was a great success, and we have a field of 15 Division 1 college teams committed for 2015. Watch for more details soon.

I’d like to send special congratulations to newlyweds Brendan Carroll and Courtney Hollister, who were married at Prout Chapel on campus Oct. 25. You can read about these former Freddie and Frieda mascots, now Falcon Flames, here.

BGSU women's basketball opens the season at home at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 against Bucknell. The defending MAC Champions, BGSU was picked to finish second this year in the division. On the men's side, the Chris Jans era opens at home on Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. against Wright State. We are excited to welcome our new coach to Bowling Green and to have the unique opportunity to also play the Battle of I-75 in football at 8 p.m. that night at Toledo!

For fans interested in seeing both games, come to the Stroh Center and support men's basketball, then ride a bus to the football game and return to the Stroh on the bus after BGSU's second win of the night. Full details will be coming at BGSUFalcons.com.
