March 2014
Dear Alumni and Friends,
As we soar into spring, BGSU is taking flight with a dramatic expansion of our aviation program. A new partnership with North Star Aviation Inc. will provide a new hangar and classroom space, modernize the aircraft fleet, and provide flight instruction for the flight school. Read more about this exciting partnership here.
Our students will also benefit from at least 96 new internship and co-op experiences in key JobsOhio industries that will be created for BGSU students thanks to the combined investment of close to $1.9 million from the Ohio Board of Regents and several businesses with operations or interests in Ohio.
BGSU students, faculty and staff show their Falcon Spirit in this "Happy" video. "Happy" singer Pharrell Williams teamed up with the United Nations Foundation for the International Day of Happiness on March 20. BGSU was happy to participate!
A surprising finding by Dr. Joseph Michalski, a 1999 alumnus of BGSU's geology program, was featured on the October 2013 cover of Nature, a prestigious journal in the sciences. Michalski discovered that several large craters on Mars are not the result of a meteor striking the planet, as previously believed, but of "supervolcanoes" that happened more than 3.5 billion years ago.
It was a big month for Falcon Athletics! Women's Basketball has advanced to the WNIT Elite Eight and Jennifer Roos has been named Russell Athletic/WBCA Regional Coach of the Year. Men's Basketball welcomed new Head Coach Chris Jans, formerly associate head coach at Wichita State, where he guided the team to a 35-1 record and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Hockey advanced to the WCHA Final Five and forward Ryan Carpenter signed with the San Jose Sharks.
April is always such a busy month for the BGSU community. Be sure the check our calendar for more information on events such as Women in Leadership, April 3; Festival Series: Improvised Shakespeare Company , April 5; 2014 Hatch , April 9; and Sebo Series in Entrepreneurship , April 11
The 2014 Doyt Perry Florida Classic was a great success! Athletics Director Chris Kingston, head football coach Dino Babers and I had the opportunity to share information about the great things we're doing at BGSU. Special thanks to the alumni of Phi Delta Theta who sponsored the 19th hole reception after the golf outing.
I would love to hear about where your BGSU degree has taken you!
Regards,
Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D.
President
