June 2014

Dear Alumni and Friends,

You might think that everything slows down a bit during the summer, but in fact, this is one of our busiest times. Not only are we preparing for the incoming class this fall, but efforts are already underway to recruit next year's class of students.

We have a lot of activity on the master plan for our Bowling Green Campus as well. Renovations are underway on South Hall to create a new home for the School of Media and Communication, work begins this summer for the new Greek village, a large-scale renovation of the Student Recreation Center is nearly complete, and the new Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation crime lab should be opening this fall. We also broke ground on the new BG Flight Center, which includes a new hanger and classroom space as part of our partnership with North Star Aviation.

We have a new addition to the BGSU family! Earlier this month we welcomed Jerry to our campus. Jerry is an explosive-detection dog provided to BGSU Police by Ohio Homeland Security and is one of only three canines in this pilot program. Jerry will be helping us out with security for large-scale events, and is available to law enforcement in surrounding communities as well.

BGSU student athletes have had a great year. Most recently, Brooke Pleger returned to the national stage competing in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division I Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Brooke took third place this year, and was named as a first team All American for the second consecutive year.

Speaking of Athletics, Coach Dino Babers is gearing up for his first football season here at BGSU. The schedule has been released, and be sure to follow Coach Babers on Twitter through the hashtag "#FalconFast" to stay up-to-date on the team.

Our alumni continue to show the power of a BGSU degree. From Broadway to big business, sports and medicine, read inspirational success stories at Falcon Proud.

We are all proud to hear that Former Falcon hockey player Rob Blake will be inducted into the National Hockey League Hall of Fame. Rob played with the Falcons from 1987-1990 and went on to a successful career in the NHL. Congratulations!

Even in the summer, our students are working to improve the community. Gordon Ricketts, director of the Arts Village learning community, and his students have worked on five murals throughout the Old South End and East Toledo neighborhoods. You can read more about the project and see some of the murals here.

If you remember, this time of year is really beautiful on campus. Do you have fond memories of summer in Bowling Green? I’d love to hear your story, if you want to share it on my Facebook page.

Regards,

Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D.
President
