Dear Alumni and Friends,
Summer is here and the Fourth of July is right around the corner!
If you will be staying or traveling near Bowling Green for the holiday, I invite you to join us for the "All Hands on Deck” musical revue on July 3 at 6 p.m. Come for the concert at Kobacker Hall in the Moore Musical Arts Center and stay for the community fireworks!
I am pleased to welcome two key leaders to the BGSU community. D. Christopher Kingston will join us on July 15 as director of intercollegiate athletics and, as of July 1, Shea McGrew, will be the vice president for University Advancement and president and chief executive officer of the BGSU Foundation, Inc. Both bring extensive experience in their respective areas.
While our summer session is in full swing, we also have many students pursuing educational opportunities outside of the classroom. Internships and co-ops provide valuable hands-on experience for students and a great way for employers to recruit talented staff. If you are interested in establishing a co-op or internship, please contact the BGSU Career Center at careerservices@bgsu.edu or call Dr. Jessica Turos at 419-372-2356.
Another aspect of active learning is student research. For senior Merissa Acerbi, hands-on engagement in neuroscience has proven to be a wellspring of inspiration and discovery. She began her first research experience just one month into her freshman year and has already amassed an impressive record of research and publishing.
Students such as Merissa consistently point to inspirational faculty as key to their success and development. Read about how BGSU alumni have made the leap from the classroom to the boardroom with the support of our dedicated faculty, along with other great stories in the latest issue of BGSU Magazine. And make sure to always have our magazine on your mobile device by downloading the new BGSU Magazine app on iTunes. We’ll be launching our Android version soon as well.
Faculty continue to gain national and international recognition for their research. Dr. Eric Dubow, professor of psychology, and his colleagues in the United States, Israel and Palestine are conducting one of the few longitudinal studies of the effects of persistent political and ethnic violence on Israeli and Arab children.
Last week, our Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to raise tuition and fees by 2 percent for the Bowling Green campus and BGSU Firelands. The increase is needed to help make up an anticipated $3 million decrease in state funding. We did not make this decision lightly. A BGSU education is an excellent value and we are committed to keeping higher education within reach without sacrificing quality.
Alumni across the country will celebrate their BGSU education throughout the summer with Alumni Association events in Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis and San Diego. For event details and registration, please visit the Alumni Association calendar.
Athletics Sports Information Director Dave Meyer has been getting some serious media coverage from Yahoo! Sports, CBS Sports and USA Today. Don't miss the hit that has the sports world talking.
