Dear Alumni and Friends,
Even though we are just weeks away from welcoming our Class of 2017 to campus, efforts are well underway for recruiting next year's class of BGSU students. If you know a student who would benefit from our commitment to providing a lasting and meaningful educational experience, please refer them to our Admissions website.
Bowling Green State University continued its longstanding tradition of excellence in vocal performance this July when The Sunny Boys placed second in the collegiate quartet division at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention in Toronto, Canada.
Read about the fascinating research being conducted by Dr. Sheryl Coombs, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and her students. Funded by the Office of Naval Research, they are investigating how the sensory capabilities of fish could improve autonomous underwater vehicles for our country's military.
Dr. Scott Rogers, a BGSU professor of biological sciences, and his colleagues have revealed a surprising variety of life forms possibly living and reproducing in the most extreme of environments of Lake Vostok, buried under a glacier in Antarctica. His recent paper about the project has brought an avalanche of worldwide publicity and interest, from both the scientific community and the popular media, from Science News to National Geographic, to the BBC in London and Discovery Kids.
The University's research prowess will only continue to grow judging by the 42 scholars from BGSU and Owens Community College presenting their research at the SETGO (Science, Engineering and Technology: Gateway Ohio) roundup this month.
From green-roofed bike shelters to more convenient recycling, the University is continuing our progress toward campus sustainability with a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
We continue to see other changes across campus with groundbreaking at the new Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Information Laboratory and plans for a Math Emporium at Olscamp Hall.
I am so proud of our faculty, staff and retirees who chose once again to support student success this past fiscal year by donating almost $1 million to scholarships and other University initiatives during our annual Family Campaign.
Can you believe our first home football is only a month away? I hope you can join us as the Falcons take on Tulsa on August 29!
Regards,
Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D.
