February 2014
Dear Alumni and Friends,
I am so proud of our student academic teams such as Falcon Forensics and Debate Team which last year won the national competition in forensics and debate and just beat defending champion Miami University at the Ohio Forensics Association State Championship. Please join me in wishing them all the best as they advance to the National Comprehensive Tournament in March.
Our students are also making incredible progress with Dance Marathon which continues to grow in scope each year. Their passion for helping children in need is a source of ongoing inspiration to me.
It’s always wonderful to celebrate Valentine’s Day at BGSU as our thousands of Falcon Flames from across the country generously share their photos and stories with their alma mater.
I look forward to welcoming alumni in Lima at the Shawnee Country Club on March 10 from 6-8 p.m. Please join me to share your BGSU experience with prospective students including any student guests you know who may be interested in attending the University this fall.
For those of you interested in continuing your own studies, I think you will find this story of a mother and daughter who completed their master’s studies together through BGSU’s online and blended learning courses to be touching and informative.
Our creative writing alumni and faculty continue to enjoy national recognition including the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, Iowa Short Fiction Prize, Barthelme Prize for Short Prose and Nancy Dasher award.
Business and entrepreneurial success will be the focus in April as the College of Business Administration hosts Women in Leadership on April 3; Entrepreneurship Week on April 7 – 11; “The Hatch” on April 9; The Dallas Hamilton Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame on April 10; and the Sebo Series in Entrepreneurship on April 11.
I hope you have the chance to experience the creativity of our Department of Theatre and Film with their puppetry adaptation of“Frankenstein” which premieres on March 27 and runs until April 5 in the Eva Marie Saint Theatre at the Wolfe Center for the Arts.
BGSU women's basketball is 13-1 in the MAC and just four games away from another conference championship. The MAC Tournament is March 12-15 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Purchase tickets online and join me to cheer Falcons basketball to victory!
Finally, please be on the lookout next week for a survey from the BGSU Alumni Association about how we can continue to find new ways to connect with and serve you. If you would prefer to opt out of the survey, please respond here. Otherwise, your ideas and insights will help inform our outreach efforts in the future. Thanks for your ongoing support and loyalty.
Regards,
Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D.
President
