December 2014

Happy New Year from BGSU! As 2014 comes to a close and we prepare for the start of the spring semester, I’ve been reflecting on the progress we've made as a University community, and am reminded of all the things that make us proud to be Falcons.

Nearly 1,000 students joined the ranks of BGSU alumni at our December commencement ceremonies when they received their bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The University awarded Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award-winning composer Jennifer Higdon ’86, ’14 (Hon.) and

media/entertainment executive and Global Group President of Discovery Studios Eileen O’Neill ’90, ’14 (Hon.) with honorary doctorates for notable work in their respective fields. Having both of them back to campus was an absolute honor.

I thought you might enjoy viewing the "Falcon Moments" some of our students shared with us at commencement.

The BGSU community continues to benefit from the generous support of our alumni and friends. This year, BGSU participated in “Giving Tuesday,” a national day of philanthropy that follows Thanksgiving, and raised $31,062 in 24 hours.

Bowling Green was recently recognized by the financial website Wallethub for being one of the “Best College Towns in America,” ranking 28th out of 280 cities across the U.S. I am so proud that others get to learn what makes our University and town special.

BGSU secured its first bowl game victory in a decade with a defeat over South Alabama in the inaugural Raycom Media Camellia Bowl! I am already counting the days until the 2015 season when we take on the University of Tennessee on Sept. 5 in Nashville.

Our faculty continue to pioneer research in their academic disciplines. Recently, a study led by Dr. Annette Mahoney, professor of psychology, examined the spiritual dimensions of marriage. It was funded by a $1.3 million grant from the Templeton Foundation.

For the seventh year, BGSU will be participating in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Challenge. In 2014, more than 800 students volunteered at 51 local sites. This year, we are welcoming former BGSU President Sidney A. Ribeau back to campus to deliver remarks on Dr. King’s legacy. The presentation will take place on campus on Jan. 20 and is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, you are invited to the annual BGSU Alumni Fun Day. Our nationally recognized hockey and women’s basketball teams play at the Ice Arena and Stroh Center and we are hosting a variety of events throughout the day. This is a great opportunity to return to campus. Registration available on the Alumni web site.

I also hope you'll "save the date" for Bravo BGSU on Saturday, March 28. This celebration of the arts will feature musical performances, art exhibits, dance performances, artist demonstrations and a gala dance. Watch for more details later this month.

This past year was a truly memorable one for BGSU. I know 2015 will bring more great things to this great University.
