Dear Alumni and Friends,

Welcome to our 2013-14 academic year! There is nothing like welcoming 3,400 incoming freshmen to campus to make you proud and grateful to be part of the BGSU community. This year, our new students have the highest grade point average in our history, and the highest average ACT score in 25 years.

One of our new students is already a nationally recognized author. Kristen Grom, of West View, Penn., emerged with the top prize in Scholastic's PUSH novel writing competition after her work, "Hopefully Yours," was selected out of 400 submissions.

I am pleased to welcome back our returning students, many of whom had amazing experiences during the summer semester. Senior Tom Welch, a computer science major at the Firelands campus, worked for the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland as a software engineering intern. Dominique Hicks, a senior telecommunications major from Detroit, spent the summer working at WSB-TV, Atlanta’s No. 1 news station.

The fall semester also brings us another Falcon football season. I hope you will be able to join us at some of our games, including Homecoming 2013 when the Falcons take on UMass at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5! The BGSU Alumni Association will host a variety of events during Homecoming weekend as well as tailgate celebrations throughout the season.

A highlight at football games and other campus events throughout the year is when Freddie and Frieda swoop in to spread Falcon fun and spirit. Read about other traditions like our school colors, squirrels, ghosts and Ay Ziggy Zoomba on our traditions and legends page.

I hope you and any budding young scientists will join us on Saturday, Sept. 7, for BGSU’s annual STEM in the Park. This free event features interactive displays and activities to engage children of all ages in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Season tickets are available for the BGSU Festival Series, which begins on Sept. 28 in Kobacker Hall, where guests will enjoy a live taping of the popular National Public Radio show “From the Top,” hosted by Christopher O’Riley. Information about Festival Series, and many more Arts events, can be found in the 2013 Fall Arts Calendar.

Three BGSU alumni are going back to school with the distinction of being named among the best educators in the nation. Congratulations to Kelsey Feyes ’10, Cheryl Montag ’85 and Todd Schreiber ’87 for their recent Teacher of the Year recognition. I love to hear about the recent successes of all BGSU alumni, so please send us your accomplishments and updates.

I enjoy this fantastic alumni story from Jacob Nix. He just graduated this month with a Master of Accountancy degree and received numerous awards and scholarships that helped make his education possible. In recognition of such help along the way, Jacob has already made plans to endow a scholarship for future accounting students. Thank you to Jacob and all of our generous BGSU donors!

Regards,

Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D.
President
