The new name reflects the college’s industry-relevant degree programs and commitment to innovation

Bowling Green State University recently approved renaming its College of Technology, Architecture and Applied Engineering to align more closely with its strategic vision, programmatic focus and future trajectory.

The newly renamed College of Engineering and Innovation comprises the School of Aviation, School of Engineering and School of the Built Environment and nearly two dozen degree programs that prepare graduates to meet Ohio’s workforce needs in aviation, engineering, architecture and construction management.

Dr. Wael Mokhtar, dean of the college, said the name change resulted from a multi-year process of reimagining degree programs, establishing new schools and investing in infrastructure to further position BGSU as a leader in providing industry-relevant programs.

“The College of Engineering and Innovation embodies our strategic vision, programmatic focus and future trajectory as we strive to provide a top-tier educational experience,” Mokhtar said. “This renaming represents the culmination of evolving to meet the needs of both students and industry and underscores our ongoing dedication to innovation. We are steadfast in our mission to deliver an education of value that effectively prepares students for meaningful careers.”

The name change precedes the opening of the BGSU Technology Engineering Innovation Center, a new state-of-the-art facility that will blend classroom and hands-on learning to further elevate the University’s reimagined degrees in robotics engineering, electronic and computer engineering and mechanical and manufacturing engineering and support the existing visual communication technology degree.

The innovative facility supporting the School of Engineering will feature seven large-scale specialty labs to facilitate experiential learning on the latest robotics and engineering technology. It will also house ultra-modern classrooms and collaboration space to support quality teaching and creative activities.

The Technology Engineering Innovation Center, set to open in Spring 2026, is located adjacent to Kokosing Hall, home to the School of the Built Environment, the only school of its kind in Ohio where architecture and construction management students learn in a collaborative environment, mirroring how the two professions work together in the industry.

The school is also home to the only Master of Architecture program in northwestern Ohio to earn full National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation.

Through the School of Aviation, BGSU is answering the nationwide demand for pilots and preparing students for the many diverse roles in aviation management and operations. The nationally recognized aviation program, one the largest programs in Ohio and the country, continues to experience record enrollment growth, with a 34% increase in new students for Fall 2024.
