Sex as a civil liberty topic of BGSU Constitution Day talk
BOWLING GREEN, O.—Bowling Green State University will celebrate Constitution Day on Monday, Sept. 15, with a special talk by former history faculty member Dr. Leigh Ann Wheeler.
Wheeler will give a lecture titled “‘Handmaiden of the Pornographer,’ Champion of Free Speech: The American Civil Liberties Union and Sexual Expression, 1960s-1980s.”
The free event will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. in 201 Bowen-Thompson Student Union and includes a reception after the talk.
Now on the history faculty at the State University of New York at Binghamton, Wheeler’s work revolves around the key problem of understanding the gendered and changing nature of sexual culture in 20th century United States. “How Sex Became a Civil Liberty,” her latest book, shows how the ACLU profoundly changed the ways Americans think about, legislate and adjudicate sexual issues.

The lecture is sponsored by the Bernard Mann Pre-Law Education Fund, the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Political Science, School of Cultural and Critical Studies and the BGSU Pre-Law Society.
