‘Sin by Silence’ to screen at BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, O.—In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Bowling Green State University Women’s Center will be showing the documentary “Sin By Silence,” followed by a question-and-answer session with Brenda Clubine, whose story is featured in the film.

The screening will begin at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Gish Film Theater in Hanna Hall and is free and open to the public.

Directed by Olivia Klaus, “Sin by Silence” illuminates the lives of battered women who have been incarcerated for killing their abusive partners in self-defense. The film focuses on the first inmate-initiated and led support group in the U.S. prison system, Convicted Women Against Abuse, and its creator, Clubine.  The award-winning film shatters misconceptions about domestic violence survivors and is on the American Library Association's list of Notable Videos for Adults.

Clubine, who now travels the country speaking in support of justice for battered women, spent 26 years in California State Prison for defending herself against her abusive husband.

She also will be the keynote speaker during the Silent Witness Unveiling at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Dayspring Church, 17360 N. Dixie Hwy, Bowling Green. The unveiling is free and open to the public.
