BG's Lefeld is Academic All-American
BOWLING GREEN, O.—Foot problems have hampered Matt Lefeld on the basketball court this season at Bowling Green State University. But nothing is stopping the BGSU senior in the classroom, where a 3.97 grade point average has earned him third-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors.
A purchasing and supply chain management major from Coldwater, Lefeld is among the top 15 scholar-athletes in Division I men's basketball, as named by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Student-athletes must have a GPA above 3.2 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible for the recognition. Lefeld, a center, has started 16 games this season and averaged 3 points per game.
He is the first Falcon athlete this year and the 65th ever to be chosen as an Academic All-American. Only three other men's basketball players have earned the distinction--John Heft, an honorable mention pick in 1969; Joe Faine, a second-team selection in 1980, and Steve Martenet, a third-team choice in 1988.
Lefeld has also received Academic All-District and Academic All-MAC honors, twice each, from CoSIDA and the Mid-American Conference, respectively.
