2,000 high school musicians to visit BGSU
Jamie BernsteinBOWLING GREEN, O.—The nearly 2,000 high school musicians and band directors expected to attend the 48th annual Band Music Reading and Directors Clinic Jan. 19-21 at Bowling Green State University's College of Musical Arts will have a special treat in store. This year's special guest is writer and broadcaster Jamie Bernstein, the daughter of legendary American composer, conductor and educator Leonard Bernstein.
Clinic activities will be held in Bryan Recital Hall and Kobacker Hall at the Moore Musical Arts Center on the Bowling Green campus. All concerts will take place in Kobacker Hall.
The guest conductors for the three-day clinic are Dr. David Gillingham (cq), a professor of composition at Central Michigan University, and Dr. Paula Holcomb, director of bands at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
On Friday (Jan. 20), Jamie Bernstein will preside over “A Conversation with Jamie Bernstein” at 2:30 p.m. in Kobacker Hall.
The BGSU Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Moss, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday (Jan. 20). Moss is director of bands at BGSU. The program will feature the brass section of the Toledo Symphony performing on three works, including “Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare” by Richard Strauss. The evening performance will also include “A Lincoln Portrait” by Aaron Copland, which will be narrated by Bernstein.
In addition, those attending the clinic will have the opportunity to hear the BSGU Concert Band, as well as five guest high school and junior high school bands from Ohio.
Performances on Saturday (Jan. 21) begin at 8:15 a.m. with the Defiance Junior High School Symphonic Band, directed by BGSU alumnus Scott Rodgers; the Bowling Green High School Symphonic Band, directed by BGSU alumnus Thomas Headley; the Whitmer High School Symphonic Band, directed by BGSU alumnus Raymond Novak; the Cambridge High School Symphonic Band, directed by Troy Woodmansee, and the Bellefontaine High School Symphonic Band, directed by BGSU alumnus Joe Antram.
The BGSU Concert Band will perform at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 21). The band is directed by Dr. Carol Hayward, an assistant professor of music education. Holcomb will be the guest conductor.
The final performance of the clinic, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 21), will feature the High School Honor Bands, conducted by Gillingham and Holcomb.
All events are free with the exception of the Symphonic Band concert. Tickets for the Symphonic Band concert are $8 for adults and $5 for students. To reserve tickets call 419-372-8171 or 1-800-589-2224.
