Our Economic Impact

BGSU has a tremendous, positive economic impact locally, regionally and throughout the state, generating nearly five times more tax revenue than we receive. Our students, employees and visitors contribute to the local economies. Innovative faculty offer their expertise to support existing businesses and encourage investment and entrepreneurship.

BGSU prepares students for a career and for life. We are transforming undergraduate education through our innovative Life Design program. It’s a new approach to the college experience, and BGSU is doing it bigger than any other university. Students leave BGSU with more than a degree. They have the skills and knowledge to make a difference in their families, communities and professions – to drive public good.

BGSU worked with Six Flags Entertainment Corporation – the national attraction and entertainment company that owns Cedar Point – to establish the one-of-a-kind BGSU Six Flags Resort and Attraction Management program. Read more

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost

BGSU is at the forefront of forensic science education in Ohio after the creation of the Center for the Future of Forensic Science on the BGSU campus in collaboration with the Ohio Attorney General. Read more

Great Lakes water

Researchers with the Great Lakes Center for Fresh Waters and Human Health conduct critical research to address toxic algal blooms that plague Lake Erie and freshwater sources around the world. BGSU has active research vessels on Lake Erie, as well as research sites throughout northwest Ohio.

Opiate addiction

Researchers with the Center for the Future of Forensic Science at BGSU made a life-saving discovery. They scientifically proved that the laundry detergent OxiClean will deactivate fentanyl. This finding helps law enforcement and other first responders prevent accidental exposure to the deadly drug.

Family and marriage

Researchers in the Department of Sociology and its National Center for Family and Marriage Research contribute to the understanding of evolving social patterns. They study how family structure in the United States is linked to the health and well-being of children, adults, families and communities and how this can guide public policy.

Photochemical sciences

The Center for Photochemical Sciences – the first academic facility of its kind in the world – is a research center that focuses on interactions of light with matter and its applications in the health industry, agriculture and more. It has been instrumental in addressing critical environmental and energy problems over the last two decades and has received worldwide recognition.

Programs to Meet Workforce Needs

Bowling Green State University has created five new schools and many new academic programs focusing on the needs of society and growing enrollments in healthcare and applied STEM.

School of the Built Environment

The school’s new home in Kokosing Hall brings architecture and construction management students together under one roof to learn with and from each other. We are the only school in Ohio with this innovative learning environment that offers a more complete understanding of the design-build process. Kokosing Hall is the direct result of working collaboratively with industry leaders.

School of Engineering

The need for qualified engineers has never been greater in Ohio. With accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the new BGSU School of Engineering is perfectly positioned to help students explore in-demand careers in robotics, systems engineering, advanced manufacturing, computer engineering technology and more.

School of Nursing

BGSU is the first public university in northwest Ohio to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. We recently established a stand-alone School of Nursing and invested $3 million in the creation of a new teaching space that features a 19-bed skills lab and simulation center.

School of Physical Therapy

BGSU offers Ohio’s first and only public, accelerated, hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. The two-year program draws students from around the country and allows them to complete most of their coursework online. Students visit campus twice a semester for hands-on clinical practice.

School of Aviation

BGSU is one of the only universities in the U.S. with an airport on its main campus. We have the largest pilot preparation program in Ohio and one of the largest in the nation. Our state-of-the-art learning facilities include a flight and simulation center, hangars and one of the nation’s largest and newest fleet of aircraft at an academic program.

School of Inclusive Teacher Education

BGSU has always been a national leader in education and a long-time producer of quality teachers. We maintain partnerships with more than 80 school districts in northwestern Ohio. We have established a pipeline with the second-biggest district in the state and expanded our reach into the South.

BGSU Six Flags Resort and Attraction Management program program

This undergraduate program is the only educational opportunity of its kind in the country. With required co-ops and field studies, the Six Flags Resort and Attraction Management program develops and educates future talent and leadership for this important part of the U.S. economy.
