This is a highly competitive, four-and-a-half year program that requires meeting additional admission criteria beyond the state minimum. Admission to the Middle Childhood program at BGSU requires completion of 45 hours of credit; a "C" or higher in GSW 1120, COMM 1020, EDHD 2010, EDTL 2020, EDTL 2300, MATH 2150, EDFI 3030; and an overall GPA of 2.8. In order to be eligible for the methods (professional) semester, students much achieve senior status, maintain a 2.8 GPA both cumulatively and in each area of concentration, and supply documentation of passing scores on the Praxis II examinations in their two areas of specialization.
A graduate completing the middle childhood major, possessing a minimum 2.5 BGSU cumulative grade point average, and achieving passing scores on all applicable Praxis examinations is eligible for an Ohio Middle Childhood license, valid for teaching grades four through nine (ages 8-14) in the two concentration areas selected (refer to the Middle Childhood check-sheet).
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in teacher education programs are expected to:
- Apply theories of human development and learning to their teaching through the design of lessons and units of instruction.
- Plan, implement and assess instructional strategies.
- Exhibit professional and ethical behavior when working with students, their parents, other educators and community members.
