Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement Program (AP) enables entering students to earn University credit for college-level courses taken in high school based upon the scores achieved in final examinations. Advanced Placement courses and exams are offered through high schools. The score reports are then sent to BGSU for credit review. Current credit guidelines are available from the Office of Registration and Records, Transfer Evaluation Services.

The State of Ohio, working through the University System of Ohio, has initiated policies to facilitate the ease of transition from high school to college as well as between and among Ohio’s Public colleges and universities.

Beginning in the Fall term 2009:

• Students obtaining an Advanced Placement (AP) exam score of 3 or above will be awarded the aligned course(s) and credits for the AP exam area(s) successfully completed.
• General Education courses and credits received will be applied towards graduation and will satisfy a general education requirement if the course(s) to which the AP area is equivalent fulfill a requirement.
• If an equivalent course is not available for the AP exam area completed, elective or area credit will be awarded in the appropriate academic discipline and will be applied towards graduation where such elective credit options exist within the academic major.
• Additional courses or credits may be available when a score of 4 or 5 is obtained. Award of credit for higher score values varies depending on the institution and academic discipline.
• In academic disciplines containing highly dependent sequences (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics –STEM) students are strongly advised to confer with the college/university advising staff to ensure they have the appropriate foundation to be successful in advanced coursework within the sequence.

Additionally, BGSU follows the Ohio Board of Regents’ recommended procedure for students in STEM disciplines:

When it clearly enhances the opportunity for student success, an institution should strongly advise that an AP score of at least 4 is needed for a student to be successful in a second course in a highly dependent sequence of courses in a STEM area. For example, an advisor should strongly recommend that an AP score of at least a 4 is needed on the AP Chemistry exam in order for the student to be successful in the second course in Chemistry. If a student agrees to follow this recommendation from an academic advisor, he/she should be awarded appropriate area credit in lieu of the recommended AP course credit.

ESSAY REVIEW:
To obtain a copy of your essay(s) from the Advanced Placement (AP) Program, a WRITTEN request must be sent to:

The following information must be included with the request: full name, date of test, subject of exam and the student’s return address. Enclose a check or money order (AP charges $10 per essay). AP will send essays only to students. Therefore, upon receiving their essay(s), students should call the appropriate BGSU department and make an appointment with an undergraduate adviser to have their essay(s) reviewed. The exams are not available after September. Students should, therefore, request their essay(s) in a timely manner.

SENDING SCORES TO BGSU:
At the time the student takes the exam, they request their score reports to be forwarded to the colleges of their choice. Students who do not initially request score reports be sent to BGSU and later wish to have their scores sent may contact:

There is a fee for each copy requested. The request must include the student’s social security number, subject(s) of exams taken, each year exam was taken, AP # from the score report form and BGSU’s code number (1069). BGSU accepts only official score reports from the national placement office. Student and/or school copies are not acceptable.
