The department of Ethnic Studies offers an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to foster an understanding of the histories and cultures of racial and ethnic groups in their local, national, and global contexts. The program emphasizes studies of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and the historical processes of slavery, colonial conquest, immigration, and globalization, among other subject areas.

Major, Bachelor of Arts (33 hours) - minor required - Spring 2019 course requirements

Minor (21 hours)
Ethnic Studies minors will take a total of 21 hours of Ethnic Studies courses selected in consultation with department advisor. These must include one 3000-level course and two 4000-level courses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in Ethnic Studies are expected to:

• Comprehend how racial and ethnic identities are constructed, negotiated, or contested over time, cultures, and geographical space;
• Employ diverse analytical resources, case studies, and comparative modes of study as critical cognitive tools to address issues of difference;
• Articulate general principles that shape ethnic relations and their intersections with gender, sexuality, and class in structural contexts of power;
• Draw larger theoretical lessons from comparisons among ethnic groups in the U.S. and in other diasporic sites;
• Effectively communicate and address issues of race and ethnicity, especially in multicultural environments.

Accreditation and/or Program/Cluster Review

Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.  BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2012 - 2013. Questions should be directed to the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

Professional Licensure (If applicable)

Bowling Green State University programs leading to licensure, certification and/or endorsement, whether delivered online, face-to-face or in a blended format, satisfy the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio.

Requirements for licensure, certification and/or endorsement eligibility vary greatly from one profession to another and from state to state. The Ethnic Studies program does not lead to professional licensure.

Gainful Employment (If applicable)     

Under the Higher Education Act Title IV disclosure requirements, an institution must provide current and prospective students with information about each of its programs that prepares students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation.

The Ethnic Studies program requires a Gainful Employment disclosure.
