Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree for Art Major

College of Arts and Sciences

The School of Art is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and offers several degree options in the visual arts. Central among them is the bachelor of fine arts degree. The requirements for the B.F.A. degree, in addition to the general requirements listed in the Academic Policies section of this catalog, include the passing of an initial portfolio review upon admission and completion of:

  • Degree requirements;
  • A core of three art foundation courses;
  • A major in studio includes:
    • 5 studio core courses;
    • 6 advanced studios;
    • 3 studio capstone courses;
    • 4 courses of art history;
    • Necessary hours of electives from within the School of Art or college;
  • OR a digital arts major including
    • 8 courses of required courses within the digital arts major (either animation, imaging, or interactive art);
    • 6 courses of studio art support;
    • 2 courses of digital arts studio capstone;
    • 4 courses of art history;
    • Necessary hours of electives from within the School of Art or college;
    • CS 1010 or CS 2010
  • OR a graphic design major including:
    • 2 required courses within the graphic design studio core;
    • A successful second portfolio review after ARTD 2020;
    • 8 required courses within the graphic design studio area, one being a required Internship;
    • 4 required courses of Graphic Design Studio Capstone, three being required Senior Thesis;
    • 6 courses of studio art support;
    • 4 courses of art history;
    • Necessary hours of electives from within the School of Art or college;
  • OR a major in art education including:
    • 6 Studio art core courses;
    • 5 studio art electives;
    • 4 courses of art history;
    • 5 courses of art education core;
    • 2 courses of art education capstone;

To fulfill the prerequisites for teaching internship, a student must receive a "C" or better in GSW 1120, COMM 1020, and EDTL 2010; complete ARTE 2520, 3520, 3820, 4070 and 4520; and maintain a 2.5 minimum accumulative GPA. For licensure and certification, students must successfully pass the Praxis exam.

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES DEGREE REQUIREMENTS for the BFA in the SCHOOL OF ART

Foreign language. Each student is required to demonstrate proficiency in a language area by one of the options listed below:

  • Graduating from a high school where all instruction was conducted in a language other than English;
  • Demonstrating proficiency in the language on the 1020 course level;
  • Having completed two years of one language in high school (student must have completed the second full year, for example, Spanish II, and received credit for these courses);
  • Completing one of the following course sequences.

German, Russian and East Asian Languages (Chinese, Japanese}

Credit toward a degree is not granted for foreign language courses that duplicate more than two units of high school study.

Arts & Sciences Multidisciplinary Component. The Arts & Sciences Multidisciplinary Component is grounded in the conviction that acquiring proficiency in multiple modes of thought and communication, referred to as habits of mind, is the defining characteristic of a liberal arts education. This four­ course component will enhance students' ability to see things from multiple perspectives, conceptualize problems in both quantitative and verbal terms, solve problems both analytically and creatively, and communicate effectively both within and across cultural boundaries.

As a college anchored in the tradition of liberal arts and sciences, we believe that acquiring multiple habits of mind is valuable both in its own right and as a way to promote lifelong learning. As the largest college in a comprehensive regional institution serving the state and nation, we also believe that the imagination, awareness, analytical acumen, and precision of expression fostered by a 21st­ century arts and sciences degree program are crucial to success in the global age, regardless of one's professional path.

Students will work closely with their college advisers and faculty mentors to maximize the potential of the Arts & Sciences Multidisciplinary Component. The four courses selected for this component may be closely related to the major, sample the diverse domains of the arts and humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, or be interdisciplinary in nature. Each course must have a different prefix, and at least two courses must be at the 3000- or 4000-level. Additionally, courses applied to the Arts & Sciences Multidisciplinary Component may not be used to fulfill major, minor, or BGP requirements. A list of eligible courses is printed in the College of Arts & Sciences Handbook and tracked by the Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS).

Lab Science. One course. If approved for BGP, this course may also count in the appropriate BGP domain.
