Pre-Physician Assistant

If you’re drawn to medicine because you want to help people in a hands-on way, a career as a physician assistant – or PA – could be a great fit. PAs are in high demand as valuable members of a patient’s care team. They have a shorter training path and more flexibility than physicians.

Pre-physician assistant (or pre-PA) is a pre-professional track at BGSU. Choosing this track is a great way to make sure you’re ready to apply to a master’s program in physician assistant studies after earning your bachelor’s degree. (Note: The profession is transitioning to using “physician associate” rather than “physician assistant.”)

Pre-PA students not only take the classes required for admission to a PA professional program, but also have a major in a specific subject area.

A master’s degree in physician assistant studies usually takes 2-3 years. Medical school typically takes four years with another three to eight years of residency.

Why choose a career as a physician assistant?

A career as a physician assistant/associate is a great fit if you want a rewarding career with a manageable educational timeline.

  • A fast track to patient care. It takes much less time to become a PA than it does to become a doctor. PAs conduct exams, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications and perform some procedures.
  • Versatility and specialization. You could work in family medicine, pediatrics, surgery, cardiology or even emergency medicine.
  • Collaborative work environment. PAs work alongside physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. You'll learn from experienced doctors and contribute valuable skills to the healthcare team.
  • Strong job security. The demand for PAs is rapidly growing. This translates to good salaries and benefits.
  • Making a difference. PAs play a crucial role in expanding access to quality healthcare.
  • Work-life balance. Compared to some physician specialties, the PA role can offer more predictable hours and a better work-life balance.

How do you decide between MD and PA?

This decision depends a lot on your personal experience and what you want out of your career. Many people value the flexibility of a career as a PA.

Another factor to consider is the length of time it takes to earn your degree and start working with patients. It takes two or three years to complete a master’s PA program, while medical school is typically four years with another three to eight years of residency.

Shadowing a PA and an MD will give you a window on these two closely related careers and help you decide.

Curriculum

Coursework for pre-PA students varies by major. Some majors include most, if not all, of the courses required for admission to a PA program.

It’s important to work with your academic advisor and the Office of Pre-Professional Programs to make sure you complete the prerequisites you need to apply to physician assistant school.

Admission requirements vary by school. Students are responsible for verifying all prerequisite courses with the PA school of their choice. Typically, admissions committees require these courses. (The equivalent BGSU courses are indicated in parentheses.)

The BGSU Center for Undergraduate Research program helps you participate in research in year one. Some students have published papers or presented posters at conferences before they graduate.
