Our online music education degree track in teaching artistry is specifically tailored for those already working in music teacher jobs. Students incorporate their current teaching roles into the coursework. They work with a faculty mentor as they plan and implement an action research project in their own music classroom.

Curriculum

Music education degree graduate students are expected to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA while they learn to:

  • Evaluate contemporary literature and research to form and convey ideas about current issues in music education, such as teaching methods, assessment and standards.
  • Examine and evaluate the role of music and music education in human life and culture.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom instruction and inclusive curriculum development for students of all abilities. 
  • Know how to find, understand, interpret, organize and apply music and music education research in meaningful ways. 

Coursework includes research experience that contributes to collective knowledge and establishes graduates as thought leaders.

Capstone project

Capstone projects for the Master of Music in music education degree vary. On-campus students have a choice between completing a thesis or a comprehensive exam process. Students taking online courses may complete an action research project.
