Advising Appointment Expectations
As your academic advising team, we believe in fostering a strong partnership.
- We're committed to guiding you every step of the way, from your first day at BGSU through graduation.
- We will teach, challenge and support you as work toward achieving your academic, personal and career goals.
But like any successful partnership, it's a two-way street. We have the greatest chance of success when we are all prepared and know what to expect from each other.
What you can expect from your advisor
- Inclusive, confidential and respectful advice
- Guidance with academic planning and course selection
- Assistance in understanding BGSU academic policies and procedures
- Prompt responses to your questions and concerns
- Referrals for available resources and support services on campus and in the broader community
- Encouragement and support as you define and achieve your academic goals
What your advisor expects from you
- Respectful questions and a willingness to share concerns throughout the semester
- Punctuality – Be on time for advising appointments or cancel in advance if you are unable to attend an appointment.
- Preparation – Have questions ready, take notes and be engaged in your advising appointments.
- Willingness to use available resources to help you make informed decisions (degree audit, MyBGSU, academic calendar, etc.)
- Acceptance of responsibility for your decisions and actions (or inactions) that affect your educational progress and goals
- Openness to developing your goals and considering all the recommendations we provide
