About our Math and Statistics Programs
The BGSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers undergraduate degrees in data science, actuarial science, mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics, and minors in mathematics and statistics.
Students in these programs are eligible for a number of scholarships. The department offers master’s programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and applied statistics, and PhD programs in mathematics, in statistics, and in data science.
A high percentage of our graduate students receive assistantships each year. Together with the College of Education, we run the largest secondary mathematics education program in Ohio. The department has an active Actuarial Science Society, a new data science team, and also an active Putnam competition team. Class sizes are consistently under 30 students and even smaller at the upper level.

Ratnasingam Awarded 2020 Graduate College Distinguished Dissertation Award
Doctoral recipient Suthakaran Ratnasingam was awarded the 2020 Graduate College Distinguished Dissertation Award. The committee found his dissertation, Sequential Change-Point Detection in Linear Regression and Linear Quantile Regression Models Under High Dimensionality, to be an "outstanding and sophisticated example of scholarly research."
Ning Awarded Simons Foundation Grant
Professor Wei Ning was awarded a Collaboration Grant for Mathematicians from the Simons Foundation. These are five year grants designed to increase collaborative contacts between mathematicians and statisticians. The grants will provide funding for Dr. Ning to work with his collaborators and to invite other mathematicians and statisticians to BGSU.
Izzo Awarded NSF Grant
Professor Alexander Izzo has been awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation for a research project concerning new developments at the interface of Banach algebras and complex analysis. In addition to providing support for Dr. Izzo (Principal Investigator) and travel funds, the grant also provides support for a graduate student research assistant.
Ward Awarded Simons Foundation Grant
Assistant Professor Ben Ward was awarded a Collaboration Grant for Mathematicians from the Simons Foundation. Rogers NSF Grant
Associate Professor Kimberly Rogers has developed and implemented an NSF-funded peer-mentoring program for graduate student instructors. As PI on multiple NSF projects she helps experienced graduate students become effective peer-mentors and facilitate and coordinate a peer-mentoring program focused on developing graduate students’ abilities to implement active-learning techniques in mathematics departments across a number of universities.

This award was given to the staff members who provided excellent customer service to the BGSU community, improved the quality of programs and/or services on the BGSU campus, implemented a new idea or program to benefit the BGSU community, and demonstrated exemplary commitment to the core values of BGSU.
Mathematics and Statistics Graduate Program Deadline
The preferred deadline for full consideration for admission and funding is January 31, 2022. We will continue to accept applications until June 15 for international students, and August 1 for domestic students.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in Mathematics are expected to be able to:
- Understand what mathematics and statistics are, how they are done, and how they relate to other disciplines;
- Use the language of mathematics and statistics to communicate basic ideas, techniques, and results;
- Objectively and critically evaluate information and assess performance, using mathematical ideas;
- Demonstrate appreciation for the beauty, utility, and impact of mathematics and statistics;
- Apply mathematical problem-solving techniques in novel situations;
- Use appropriate technology to attack a wide variety of mathematical tasks successfully.
Accreditation and/or Program/Cluster Review
Bowling Green State University [BGSU] is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. BGSU has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 01/01/1916. The most recent reaffirmation of accreditation was received in 2023. Questions should be directed to the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
The Mathematics program will undergo Program/Cluster Review during the Academic Year 2026-27.
Professional Licensure (If applicable)
Bowling Green State University programs leading to licensure, certification and/or endorsement, whether delivered online, face-to-face or in a blended format, satisfy the academic requirements for those credentials set forth by the State of Ohio.
Requirements for licensure, certification and/or endorsement eligibility vary greatly from one profession to another and from state to state. The Mathematics program does not lead to professional licensure.
