Master's Program Application Process

All application materials are submitted through CSDCAS and are due December 15 of the application year. Please be early to ensure that all materials are received on time. 

**Please note the following:
Applicants who submit any of their materials after the December 15 of the application year deadline will NOT be eligible for review.

If you are in need of Academic Update to complete your 4 required CDIS pre-requisites, you may do so.  We are aware that your final transcript will arrive after this deadline, and that is permissible. All other materials must be received by December 15 of the application year. BGSU will accept Academic Update ONLY for students who need their fall semester classes to complete the required 4 CDIS pre-requisites.  All others who submit Academic Update will NOT have their fall grades included in their admissions review.

Complete the CSDCAS application

• Access the CSDCAS Application Portal
  
• Carefully follow all CSDCAS instructions. Review the CSDCAS Applicant Help Center page before completing your application.
  • We consider each applicant using a multitude of features. Each applicant should include as much information about their background and activities as possible to support their CSDCAS application.
• You must hit "submit" by December 15 of the application year.
  
• The following information must be submitted directly to CSDCAS in order to complete the application:

(a) Three letters of recommendation.  These should be sent electronically to CSDCAS.   Recommendations should be requested from individuals who are best suited to comment on your fitness for graduate study in the field of communication disorders. It is recommended that a minimum of two of your letters come from academic faculty, preferably from the student's home department.  No BGSU cover sheet is needed.

(b) Personal letter of application.  Please respond to the following questions in an essay of no more than 500 words.

What makes you a strong candidate for our graduate program in speech-language pathology?  Please discuss what you have learned from your academic and personal experiences that has prepared you to succeed in a rigorous graduate program and clinical profession. Provide specific examples.

Describe your abilities and experiences in interacting with people from all walks of life, levels of ability, and cultural and economic backgrounds. How would you tackle the challenges of working with people who are different from you?

All applicants are considered for funding (scholarship & stipend); there is NOT a separate application or other procedure necessary to be considered.  Should an admitted student not want funding, they would relay that information at the time of the offer.  Offered amounts are awarded on a competitive basis, based on ranking in the applicant class.

If you are applying for our M.S.-Ph.D. Pathway, in addition to the above information you must also include a statement indicating that you are applying to the M.S.-Ph.D. Pathway.

(c) Transcripts. Have your official transcripts (from every university you have attended) sent directly to CSDCAS. Please see the "Sending US/Canadian Transcripts" information on the CSDCAS FAQ site. They have a form to use, and an address to tell your university.  When entering info from transcripts into CSDCAS, please use the category "Communication Science Disorders" for each class that is in your Communication Sciences and Disorders major.  If you have a different major, use "Communication Science Disorders" for your Communication Sciences and Disorders classes and see our "post-bac" information.

International applicants: You are required to arrange for foreign transcript reports to be sent directly to CSDCAS from the foreign transcript evaluation agency. CSDCAS information includes a list of possible transcript evaluation agencies. See info here.  Also, international students are required to complete the TOEFL and may be requested to provide the Department with a recorded speech sample. The BGSU School/Institution code is 1069 and CDIS Department Program/Department code is 0620. The TOEFL code for CSDCAS is C122.

Regardless of where you earned your degrees, DO NOT submit any materials to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders or the BGSU Graduate College.

Master's Degree Admission Criteria and Prerequisites

A student's admission to the Master's program in Speech-Language Pathology is dependent upon the following criteria*:

1. Graduation from an accredited undergraduate college or university.
2. A minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.00, and a minimum GPA of 3.20 in the major.
3. Three letters of recommendation (sent to CSDCAS)
4. Personal letter of application. (sent to CSDCAS)
5. Successful completion of the following courses, or their equivalents.  A minimum of 4 completed prerequisite classes must be completed and those grades included on your transcript and verified by CSDCAS to be considered for admission.  If you are enrolled in the 4 prerequisite courses in the fall semester that you are completing your application, you will need to utilize “Academic Update” in CSDCAS (https://portal.csdcas.org/csdcasHelpPages/instructions-and-faq/processing-your-application/updating-the-applicationacademic-update/). Students seeking public school certification may need additional course work at the graduate level. Descriptions of these courses can be found in the University's Undergraduate Catalog.

   **If you do not complete the required pre-requisites, your admission offer may be withdrawn or your program completion be delayed by at least one semester. If you experience any difficulties in completing planned courses, contact the graduate coordinator immediately. 

   • CDIS 1230 Introduction to Communication Disorders (optional; BGSU undergraduate requirement only)
     
   • CDIS 2240 Phonetics
   • CDIS 2250 Speech and Language Acquisition and Development
   • CDIS 3010 Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism
   • CDIS 3020 Acoustics for Speech and Hearing
   • At least 1 course in any specific speech-language disorders topic, for example...    
             CDIS 3110 Phonological Assessment and Intervention
             CDIS 3510 Language Assessment and Intervention
             NOTE: Both are strongly recommended, if offered at your university
     
   • CDIS 3610 Diagnostic Audiology
   • CDIS 4010 Clinical Methods in Communication Disorders
