2024 Campus Sustainability Month | October
Universities across the country are shining the spotlight on sustainability issues this month in order to spur action for change! BGSU has committed to taking a firm stance against global climate change through Objective 5 in the Strategic Plan and completing a Climate Action Plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040! Now it's your chance to learn about and get involved with sustainability at BGSU through programming across campus! Every event you attend or volunteer for will get you a raffle ticket to win a Sustainable Prize. The more activities and events you attend, the more chances you get to win!

Thursday, October 3, & Tuesdays, October 15 and 22 | Tree Plantings | Various Locations | 1:00 - 2:15 p.m. Fall is tree planting season, and what is more sustainable than a beautiful tree? Volunteers will join in the planting of multiple trees. Your impact will serve to sequester carbon and produce oxygen for years to come at BGSU. Supplies will be provided. Wednesday, October 9 | Sustainability Trivia Night | Education 201 | 6 - 7:30 p.m. Join us for a fun and informative evening of trivia focused on waste reduction and sustainability! Test your knowledge and compete for prizes while learning about waste in our country and on our planet. |
Saturdays, October 12 and October 19 | Green Game Day Join us at the football games! Volunteers will drive golf carts, interact with the BGSU community and help distribute recycling bags, as well as picking up full bags. Reduce waste, increase recycling, and have fun! Signup on BGSUserves required. |
Sunday, October 13 | Fall Colors Bike Tour | Slippery Elm Trail | 1 - 4 p.m. The Office of Campus Sustainability is partnering with Outdoor Adventure Club for a Group Bike Ride! Bring your own bike as we appreciate the ecosystems of the area and immerse ourselves in nature. Meet at the BGSU Bike Garage, RSVP on SignUpGenius! |
Monday, October 14 | Film: Single-Use Planet | Olscamp 115 | 7 - 8:30 p.m. Plastic is vital in so many ways to our modern way of life and well-being — but not all forms of it. Single-Use Planet explores the connections of plastic's environmental and public health impacts, plastics production, and industry influence on government policy. Come see what you can do to fight single use plastics that are destroying ocean and other habitats as well as threatening our health. Free snacks, and if you stay for the discussion to follow the film, you'll get service credit! |
Wednesday, October 16 | Film: Common Ground and Panel Discussion | Student Union Theater, Room 206 | 5:30 - 7:45 p.m. The Common Ground film reveals how unjust practices forged our current farm system, yet profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white, black and indigenous farmers who are using 'regenerative' agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health, and stabilize our economy. |
Friday, October 4, 11, 18, & 25 | Friday Night Lights | Student Union 2nd Floor Lobby | 6 - 7:30 p.m. Ready, Set, Lights Out! It’s time for Friday Night Lights, an energy reduction program where volunteers turn off lights in academic buildings. Sign up on BGSUserves. |
Thursday, October 24 | Campus ReStore Open | McDonald Hall Annex | 12 - 2 p.m. The ReStore is ready for harvest! Regular rules apply: BGSU ID required, one reasonably sized reusable bag. Bring your own bag, please! Register as a store volunteer on BGSUserves. |
Friday October 25 and Saturday October 26 | Camping and Service | Oak Openings Preserve Join us at the Oak Openings Preserve for a campout on the night of Friday, October 25th! We will be enjoying each other’s company and some s’mores around a fire! The next morning, we will be volunteering with the Metroparks staff from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration on BGSUserves required for this overnight trip; bring your own camping gear. |
Wednesday, October 30 | Guest Seminar: Dr. Andrew Hoffman, University of Michigan How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate | Central Hall 110 | 4 - 5 p.m. Dr. Andrew Hoffman explores the intersection of social & scientific in the fight against climate change. His dynamic presentation will provide actionable steps that people of all academic disciplines can use to take climate action! Dr. Hoffman is a Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan and is an author of 100+ articles and 18 books that tackle climate change from a multi-faceted approach. We will be giving away 10 free copies of his book of the same title! |
