Attended the Università of Firenze and Bologna, received a B. A. from the University of Virginia in 1986 and a Ph.D. from UCLA in 1992. He is the author of books on Roberto Benigni, Gillo Pontecorvo, Italian Cinema, and Niccolò Machiavelli.
