Dr. Jacob Joshua Shila is an assistant professor of aviation in the School of Aviation at Bowling Green State University, Ohio. Prior to receiving both his master and doctorate at School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University, he earned his Bachelor of Science at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

With research interests spanning sustainability, environmental impacts of aviation operations, and techno-economic modeling of aviation operations, Dr. Shila researches a variety of sustainable fuel and other emerging technologies that can be applied to reduce the environmental impacts of the aviation operations – for both aircraft and airports operations. Prior to joining BGSU, Dr. Shila worked in the emissions industry as a CO2 exhaust emissions and CAFÉ simulations specialist for Volkswagen of North America. He developed computational models to examine a variety of scenarios – involving alternative fuels and electric powered vehicles - that can lead to emissions regulations’ compliance while maintaining financial profitability.

Dr. Shila’s teaching philosophy centers on clear communication of concepts and objectives, helping students grasp real-world applications of the course concepts, and mentoring students in and outside the classroom. As such, he also conducts research related to aviation education. Currently, he also serves as a faculty mentor for the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) BGSU local students’ chapter.
