Dear Alumni and Friends,

This is one of my favorite weeks of the year, when we celebrate BGSU Homecoming! Falcon pride covers campus as we welcome alumni and friends for reunions, the parade, the Freddie and Frieda 5K, college tailgate tents, the BiG barbeque and more. The week of festivities culminates on Saturday, Oct. 5, when our winning Falcon football team takes on UMass at 3:30 p.m. in Doyt Perry Stadium. It’s not too late to plan to attend, with walk-up availability for most events. Details online or at 888-839-2586.

We recently celebrated another well-known BGSU tradition, Family Weekend. More than 1,100 families came to campus to experience life as a Falcon, including one very special Falcon mom. Theresa Brand was named 2013 Parent of the Year for her amazing dedication to her family and efforts in her daughter’s journey to BGSU.

During the same weekend, BGSU recognized the generosity and impact of some of the University’s most generous and loyal donors. Students welcomed more than 125 guests to personally thank them for supporting BGSU.

I had the opportunity to update the campus community on the successes and challenges facing BGSU in my State of the University address. With recent advancements in national rankings, faculty achievement and student accomplishments, we are poised for a new era of growth and innovation, but we will all need to pull together!

As BGSU looks to the future, we want to stay in touch with you. It is easy to update your information using our simple online tool. If you submit your information by Oct. 21, you will be entered into a drawing for BGSU spirit wear. One lucky winner will receive a pair of tickets to the UT vs. BG game on Saturday, Oct. 26, including access to the Falcon Club tent.

You might enjoy this update from Brad Carper '03 who experiences the great outdoors in one of the world's most extreme cold climates — northern Alaska — for his work on various documentary and reality television programs like the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch."

BGSU faculty continue to make national headlines with research, such as a new project that shows that when it comes to running, women may get more out of high intensity interval training than their male counterparts. “Sex-specific Responses to Interval Training” was conducted by Drs. Matt Laurent and Matt Kutz from the Department of Human Movement, Sport and Leisure Studies with colleagues across the nation and will be published in an upcoming Journal of Strength and Conditioning.

The College of Musical Arts will launch BGSU’s first nationally syndicated radio show, “New Music from Bowling Green,” on Sunday, Oct. 6. See your local public radio station schedule and visit BGSU.edu/newmusic for details and a preview.
