Greetings:

The new year is off to a terrific start at BGSU and our students, faculty, alumni and programs continue to delight me with their achievements.

"We received some great news about our online master's degree in education program--it's been named  one of the best in the country, according to a new guide from U.S. News and World Report.

We're extremely proud of Erynn Truex, a senior from Tallmadge, Ohio, who is working as an intern at the National Geographic Society this semester. Erynn is the first BGSU geography major to receive this highly selective internship, and she was able to get off to a great start as a freshman in our GeoJourney program.

I also want to congratulate alumnus Mike Wilcox, chairman and chief executive officer of Wilcox Financial and Wilcox Sports Management, on being named to the board of directors of USA Football, the national governing body for the sport in the United States.

Ohio Eminent Scholar Dr. H. Peter Lu, professor of chemistry, continues to garner international attention for his work in biochemical nanoscience and has authored an article to appear in an upcoming issue of Science magazine.

Our athletic teams dominated some of our in-state rivals in January, beginning with the hockey team's back-to-back wins over Ohio State, a team ranked No. 2 in the country at the time. The Falcons followed that up by defeating Miami on the road in men's and women's basketball. It's the first time that our football, men's basketball and women's basketball have all won road games over Miami in the same year.

In other news from Athletics, the Bring Back the Glory Campaign benefitting our hockey program and the Ice Arena received a special gift of $250,000 from Scott Slater, a Bowling Green resident and longtime Falcon hockey supporter, and his family. We want to thank Scott and his family for their tremendous support of our team!

The spring semester is full of events including debut performances in The Wolfe Center for the Arts of Arabian Nights, Hercules and Chicago and I hope to meet many of you at our Meet the President events across the country. I'll be in Tampa and Orlando in February and in San Francisco and Boston in March.

More than 500 BGSU faculty, staff and students spent their Martin Luther King Jr. holiday giving back to the community as part of the 4th annual MLK Day of Service Challenge. Service is a core part of our BGSU mission and I would love to hear about how you're giving back in your community. Share your experiences on my Facebook page.
