Joëlle Khouzam
Marie-Joëlle C. Khouzam, a partner with the law firm of Bricker Graydon LLP, is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo College of Law. Growing up in Beirut with French as her native language, she attended a German elementary school and heard Arabic, Greek and Italian spoken regularly at home. After her family emigrated to the United States, she learned English at school and on Sesame Street, and had a multi-cultural upbringing in Toledo’s rich ethnic fabric. In college, she participated in Bowling Green’s Model United Nations and Academic Year Abroad in Salzburg, Austria, and was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship for graduate studies in Innsbruck, Austria. While in Innsbruck, she earned extra travel money by doing translations for Swarovski and other companies. Although Joëlle considered work at the United Nations or with the State Department’s Foreign Service, a post-graduate job with the legal department of global packaging manufacturer Owens-Illinois led her to take a different turn, to law school.
Joëlle now practices employment law, and represents businesses and non-profits of every size on issues that include workplace discrimination, harassment, restrictive covenants, handbooks and workplace policies, workplace safety issues, and related matters. Part of her practice is devoted to educating management on workplace best practices and compliance, through customized trainings on topics in areas such as workplace discrimination/harassment and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She also represents municipalities, public libraries, colleges and universities, transit authorities, and airports. She has been the City Attorney for Grandview Heights, Ohio since 2006.
Joëlle is a frequent speaker and author of emergent employment topics, and has testified before the General Assembly on several employment issues. She has been recognized by peers and clients through numerous professional awards, and is consistently ranked among the top-rated employment lawyers in Ohio and nationally. Outside of work, she serves on numerous professional organizations’ boards, and also serves several local non-profit organizations through board and volunteer involvement, including the Honors College’s Honors Leadership Council
