This week's essential COVID-19 information from BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey

Watch BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey's October 7 Video Update
In this week’s COVID-19 update, we have seen a significant decrease in the number of positive cases over the last week, and, a decrease in our daily case average. While this is encouraging, it is important we remain diligent in our efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community, both on and off campus. Continue to wear a face covering, stay physically distanced, practice good handwashing, conduct a self-wellness check before leaving your home and call a health care provider if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
October is a good month to get a flu shot, especially this year as public health officials plan for COVID-19 and flu season. Getting a flu vaccine will not protect you from COVID-19; flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, helping to conserve potentially scarce health care resources. By getting a flu shot, you will also reduce your chances of experiencing flu-like symptoms, which could lead to COVID-19 testing and quarantine as you await results.
BGSU will host flu shot clinics on campus, with dates to be announced soon. Flu shots are also readily available now at the Falcon Health Center and at local pharmacies.
We appreciate all you are doing to keep our campus communities as safe as possible.
Be well,

Awaiting COVID-19 Testing Results
If you get tested for COVID-19 at the Falcon Health Center, or as part of the surveillance testing program, results will typically be available within three to five days. Following your test, you will receive an email within 24 to 48 hours with information on how to set up an account in MyHealth Record, where test results will be posted. If a test result is positive for COVID-19, you will be contacted by a BGSU or Wood County Health Department contact tracer. The University will work with you to develop the most appropriate isolation plan.

BGSU Counseling Center Resources
During the pandemic, the BGSU Counseling Center is offering their services via telehealth at 419-372-2081. The Counseling Center has put together COVID-19 counseling resources to keep you up to date on COVID-19 and various ways to cope/offer support during this time.

BGSU COVID-19 Response Hotline 419-372-3000
The BGSU COVID-19 Response Hotline is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Staff can answer questions regarding COVID-19 and related topics. Students, faculty and staff can email health@bgsu.edu or call the hotline if they have a pending COVID-19 test, or to report a positive result to begin contact tracing. To call the hotline, reach out at 419-372-3000.

Surveillance Testing and Contact Tracing
BGSU has implemented randomized surveillance testing for undergraduate and graduate students on the main campus. The program focuses on testing students who do not have COVID-19 symptoms (asymptomatic). Students randomly selected each week will be notified via their University email and/or text message.

Student organizations shift to virtual meetings and events
BGSU student organizations have been able to build and make connections virtually this semester. Learn more from our Q&A with Associate Dean of Students Brian Heilmeier.

On-Campus Isolation and Quarantine
Isolation separates individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 from others who are not sick to minimize the spread. Quarantine separates individuals who have been exposed to someone who is positive for COVID-19 from the general public. All residence hall students are offered on-campus quarantine and isolation space. Students may choose to return home to a permanent residence.
