Alumna named head of Ohio EPA | University Choral Society holds auditions

Ohio EPA director’s environmental roots took hold at BGSU

When Laurie Stevenson graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1988 with a bachelor of Science in environmental health, she had several job offers to choose from in an emerging field.

Stevenson took a position as a hazardous waste field inspector with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and three decades later she now leads the agency.

In January, Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Stevenson as director of the Ohio EPA. She most recently served as deputy director for business relations, where she served as a primary contact for regulated entities to help coordinate permitting activities within the agency. She also served as chief of Ohio EPA’s Division of Environmental and Financial Assistance.

A public servant of more than 30 years, she previously served as the industrial liaison in the director’s office and managed Ohio EPA's small business assistance office. She held previous positions in the agency’s division of hazardous waste management.

“As you can imagine, after spending 30 years here at the EPA, it was a huge honor just to be considered and an even bigger honor to be selected,” said Stevenson, who also holds a master’s degree in public health from Ohio State University. “I think what’s really interesting and exciting to me is, I came from within the agency. I think the governor has selected a great team of cabinet directors to lead our agencies and move Ohio forward in positive ways.”

University Choral Society holds open auditions

The College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University is holding open auditions for the 2019-20 season of the University Choral Society, made up of BGSU students and community members from the Greater Bowling Green Area. The chorus rehearses from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Moore Musical Arts Center, with the first rehearsal scheduled for Aug. 27.

Highlights of the season will include performances of Benjamin Britten’s “Ceremony of Carols,” Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” and Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Paukenmesse.”

The ensemble will perform “Ceremony of Carols” as part of its annual Joyous Sounds program, also featuring the BGSU Graduate Brass Quintet, on Dec. 3 at the First United Methodist Church. “Carmina Burana” will be performed with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 14 and 15, 2020, at Toledo’s Peristyle. Finally, the “Paukenmesse” will be presented on campus May 3 with the BGSU Philharmonia.

Mark Munson, director of choral activities at BGSU, serves as director of the University Choral Society. During his tenure at BGSU he has also led the Collegiate Chorale, A Cappella Choir and University Women’s Chorus. He is a past president of the Ohio Choral Directors Association and most recently of the Central Region of the American Choral Directors Association.
