Trustees set budgets for fiscal year 2019 | Two new academic programs approved
Presidents' forum
BGSU President Rodney Rogers (right) and Ohio State University President Michael Drake (center) discuss the future and value of public higher education in Ohio. Ohio Sen. Randy Gardner moderated the July 20 forum, held in University Hall. Earlier that afternoon, the two presidents taped a segment on the topic for WBGU-TV’s “Journal,” which will air at 8 p.m. June 28 and may also be viewed later online at wbgu.org.

Board of Trustees approves operating budgets for fiscal year 2019

The Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees at its June 21 meeting provided a financial road map for the University, approving educational and general operating budgets for fiscal year 2019. Also on the agenda for the board’s last meeting of the academic year was approving a collective bargaining agreement with the campus police union.

The approved fiscal year 2019 budget includes compensation increase pools for faculty and staff. The collective bargaining agreement with the BGSU Faculty Association calls for a 3.7 percent pool to be provided for those faculty deemed to be performing at or above expectations, allocated at 1 percent across the board, 1 percent merit, and 1 percent for market adjustments. Additional funds were approved for promotion and tenure raises and market adjustments. Compensation pools of 2 percent were approved for eligible classified and administrative staff. Raises will go into effect in September.

BGSU announces two new degree programs

At its June 21 meeting, the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees approved two new degree programs, in athletic training and advertising. These programs will prepare students for high-demand career paths, both in the region and internationally.

Filling a need in northwest Ohio and the region for training specifically in the field of advertising, the trustees approved a new Bachelor of Arts in advertising, to be offered through the School of Media and Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences. The degree program is designed to be interdisciplinary, emphasizing technology skills and new media, audience analytics, strategic communication, marketing and a grounding in both theory and practice.

The major was created in response to the increasing demand for professionals in this economic sector; the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists Ohio above average in job demand for advertising. Students will choose a focus in either the creative/production or the management/research concentration. Courses in both concentrations will be offered in multiple colleges, and all majors will be required to complete a 100-hour, on-campus internship in BGSU’s media organizations, such as WBGU-TV or Falcon Radio.
