1. Aesthetics of Chinese Kungfu Cinema

Description: The film “Shadow”, directed by world famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou, centers around a story about the intrigues of an ancient minister and his double. An orphan, named Shadow, has been secretly imprisoned since he was eight years old. After going through political chaos, he strives to find his identity and freedom. “Shadow” combines a spectacular choreography of martial arts, lavish Chinese aesthetics and an intriguing plot, which makes it one of the best Kung-fu films.

This event features an introduction to the Chinese Kung-fu genre by Dr. Min Yang of the BGSU Chinese Program.

  • Eclipses and Astronomical Phenomena in Art History presented by Dr. Andrew Hershberger and the School of Art

    Eclipses and varied astronomical phenomena have inspired many artists over time, including painters, sculptors, photographers and architects. Deep connections exist between viewing eclipses and the visual arts, perhaps beginning with the camera obscura, an optical predecessor of all photographic and digital cameras. This presentation will explore related artworks by both representational and abstract artists.

The tragic story of the Korean military comfort women in the Korean Madanggeuk style. It is the stories of those who forget the painful history, those who try to use it and those who try to remember it. To not repeat this tragedy, it must be remembered. “Dear Flower” is a tribute to all "flowers" bent by the violence of war and colonialism.

Description: POPC 4600 101W 41514 Breaking Bad will be offered online during the first six-week session from May 13 to June 21. The course is an introduction to the study of genre texts via Breaking Bad. We will look at the show's popularity, its reflection of recent television trends (narrative complexity, anti-heroes and prestige television) and its juxtaposition of white masculinity with capitalism and violence. Description: This course will be offered online during the second six-week summer session, June 24 to August 2, and analyzes the modern debates over how to incorporate themes around race, gender and sexuality into the curriculum at all levels of teaching. Particular emphasis will be placed upon student demands for separate programs and departments in the 1960s and 1970s, the debates over multicultural education in the 1990s and current efforts to restrict teaching around questions of identity or systemic oppression. This class can be applied to the Ethnic Studies and Women’s Studies grad certificates, but is open to all graduate students who are interested in ethnic and gender studies.

Description: BGSU's Classified Staff Council is accepting scholarship applications for the 2024-2025 academic year.

This scholarship is given annually to selected current classified staff employees and/or their spouse or dependent(s) who are currently enrolled at BGSU and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate in a degree-seeking program (either full-time or part-time) that has at least one semester of coursework remaining at BGSU prior to graduation. The CFE is offering a total of six Faculty Associate positions next year, including a generative AI Faculty Associate Position being offered in collaboration with the Office of the Provost and a Graduate College Faculty Associate position offered in collaboration with the Graduate College. 8. Web clock outage March 15-18

Date and Time: From 5 p.m. Friday, March 15 to 6 a.m. Monday, March 18.

Description: The MyBGSU web clock tool used by Dining Services and BGSU student employees to report time will be unavailable during the CSS/FMS/HCM PeopleSoft upgrade from 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15 through no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, March 18. Supervisors should work with scheduled employees to determine how to best handle the outage for their department. Supervisors are also advised to carefully review and verify all times reported during this outage when approving time for this period.
